Anaphylaxis
My 10 1/2 year old daughter experienced an anaphylactic reaction last Saturday, which ended in a call to 911 and an ambulance ride to the ER. This has never happened before, and while she does have an appointment to see her primary physician next Monday to determine a course of action, I'm just looking for support and guidance.

9. She was cracking and eating nuts.
She was having trouble with the Brazil nut, so my husband helped her with the shell. Once she ate it, she pretty much had an immediate reaction - her chest went tight, her lips swelled, and she was throwing up.

My husband gave her a Benadryl right away, and then called 911. She told him that she didn't want to die.

By the time the amublance arrived, she was better as the benadryl had kicked in (and the ambulance crew told my husband that by giving her benedryl was the best thing he could have done, besides callind 911). She was in the ER for about 3 hours, and was prescribed an EpiPen.

I asked Matt how he knew to give her the Benadryl - he said he'd had once been out for dinner with someone who'd experienced a severe allergic reaction to something he'd eaten, and Matt remembered that this man had either taken a Benadryl or it had been given him by the ambulance crew. The memory stuck with him.

Thanks for your support!

12. A ten year old saying she doesn't want to die. *sigh*
That is heartbreaking! I'm so glad your husband knew what to do and had the presence of mind to do it.
I'll be thinking of you as you deal with this (and the fears it must raise) and await the doctor's appointment.

14. FWIW, I have a friend with nut allergies and Brazil nut is by far the worst one for her.
It's the only one where she reacted immediately. Others usually take longer and she has plenty of time to use an Epi.

2. Scary!
She might want to get and keep an epi-pen.

How horrible for both of you. :(

11. you recommended the epi pen three times
unfortunately, you can only get two doses per prescription!

Bad joke, I know.

Thanks, we do have two on hand from the ER - until we see the doctor next Monday, we're betting it's a tree nut allergy, based on her actions and the timeline.

It's weird, but her whole life, she's avoided nuts whenever she could - she'd always just told us she didn't like them, so I've just accomodated her tastes when cooking and never used them (not even in banana bread).

13. Allergies are so funny
It wasn't until a couple years ago that I realized tomatoes weren't spicy to everyone.

Unfortunately, I love spicy food... :P

17. I am very glad she's okay!
A nut alergy can be a really pain to manage, but it can be done. I hope that's all it is.

Good thoughts for your daughter, and for you.

18. Thank you for your kind thoughts
It will be quite the learning experience for us and our families - we just don't have any experience with allergies, aside from mild hay fever.

I'm already purging our pantry of nuts, nut oil, nut liquor, and the like. Perhaps it's overkill, but I'm more comfortable acting, even if I'm overreacting.

Thanks again - and good thoughts to you too (I hope your co-workers had indegestion from their holiday party steaks!).
