Random encounters: I just remembered, on a night flight from LA to Chicago,

back in the smoking & drinking & staying-up-while-everyone-else-slept section in the back of a 727 (this was in the 1980s, when you could still smoke on airplanes), back where the engines roared loud and the flight attendants hung out so the drinks delivery was quick, friendly, and consistent, I fell into a conversation with a guy who had been a bombardier on a B-52 in the 1970s.

He informed me that, given my proximity to the business end of several Arc Light strikes, I was within...literally...one to two seconds of a BUFF's bombardiers's hitting the pickle button at the right time from being turned into hamburger (or in my case, being an American Indian, maybe pemmican).

Why did I just remember that conversation?
