Humour 'comes from testosterone' - BBC
Humour 'comes from testosterone'
Men are naturally more comedic than women because of the male hormone testosterone, an expert claims.

Men make more gags than women and their jokes tend to be more aggressive, Professor Sam Shuster, of Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, says.
>
Women tend to tell fewer jokes than men and male comedians outnumber female ones.

Aggression comes from testosterone; not all humor is aggressive.

The author of the study should sit down and watch the movie Ridicule.

He documented the reaction of over 400 individuals to his unicycling antics through the streets of Newcastle upon Tyne.

And this is the basis of his theory? How people reacted to a unicycle rider?

6. I have always said that the penis is the reason that "men are funnier" than women...
Face it, the penis IS a funny thing. We realize that at a very early age and use it for a source of humor. The number of dick jokes is infinite. Eventually, some of us expand our repertoire, but we can still always fall back on a dick joke.

13. This is the "root" of the problem.
Most women really don't like "dick jokes" and their ilk, so
we don't tell them.

That makes us NOT FUNNY!

Logical.

Believe me, when women really get cracking on our
OWN schtick, men can get pretty uncomfortable.
Again, they don't think we are funny.

14. No, my point is that males start "making jokes" earlier...
because they begin with using the penis as a source of "humor"- making it "talk", waving it around, whatever...
It's just earlier exposure to the "creation of humor"
Fortunately, many men move beyond just dick jokes. Unfortunately, we all can still come up with one at a moment's notice :)

I'm also reminded that Phyllis Diller said that both men AND women are threatened by a funny woman. There may be self-censoring upon the part of women so as not to appear "threatening" to either gender.

26. That is exactly right. It is more acceptable for men to be funny.
I know for a fact I can be really funny--I crack my friends up.

But around men, I have to tone it down or they are uncomfortable.

It's not that I'm not funny. It's that men don't know how to deal with it.

8. Good christ.

The experiment by this unicycling "doctor," who fancies himself an entertainer, this self-proclaimed "expert" (in what exactly, he does not say), using himself as the test subject and failing to account for his own bias and more importantly societal influence upon gender as relates to verbal and non-verbal expression, would itself be laughable, if not so pathetic.

"Humor comes from testosterone?" Oh please. That's like saying that intelligence comes from estrogen. Oh. Wait...

12. speaking of humor, check this out...
The boss had to fire somebody, and he narrowed it down to one of two people, Debra or Jack.
It was an impossible decision because they were both super workers. Rather than flip a coin,
he decided he would fire the first one who used the water cooler the next morning.
Debra came in the next morning with a horrible hangover after partying all night.
She went to the cooler to take an aspirin.
The boss approached her and said: "Debra, I've never done this before but I have to
lay you or Jack off."
"Could you jack off?" she says. "I feel like shit."

16. I also call BULLSHIT
As a female, I often, often, often tone down my humor because it would be offensive to some and others would be freaked out for a female to say this or that. Or I just don't say things because I don't want to say those things because of the possible consequences. I may think of something funny and just not say it because I have consideration for others. This has been the case for me all my life.

And I promise I am a female... a hetero one, even. Maybe the difference is that females use some descretion or censor themselves. Maybe aggression, even in humor, is more acceptable for males.

33. Once again, I will reference the brilliant Phyllis Diller...
Diller said that both men and women are threatened by funny women. She went on to say that they are threatened even further by an attracticve funny woman. Silverman is certainly attractive, and I think that her looks work against her...because she really is the funniest stand up currently working.
That's probably the reason that many DU-ers prefer Margaret Cho to the far funnier Sarah Silverman.

28. Humor is always subjective - my kids laugh at movies that I abhor!
Slapstick - why do people laugh at other people getting hurt (I do it too).
One time my girl friend was going down the outside stairs from our apartment. The stairs were snowed over. She slipped on the first one and ass rode the steps all the way to the landing. It looked funny as hell (she didn't get hurt). As soon as she came to a stop, she looked up at her son and yelled: "don't you dare laugh!" but we couldnt' help ourselves. We didn't laugh as she was going down but as soon as we saw she was okay, we both busted a gut.
