Some guy tried to kill this couple friend of mine

The couple moved down to Mexico to start a new life. They were waiting on tables, exporting "cuban like" cigars and building websites for the hotels and resorts in puerto vallatra(sp). They details are sketchy but I guess this guy who was in on it with them flipped out and tried to kill this couple. They overpowered him, held him, and called the police. The police came and arrested all three of them. The guy who started assaulting my friends had warrants and he is still locked up. The couple were locked up for three days, had their passports taken away,told they couldn't go back to their apartment, told that they couldn't leave Mexico, and they have to stand trial all because of this loony attacking them.

I guess from what I hear, the minute they are able to, they are coming back to the states for good.

I wonder if it would be worth it to cross "illegally" back into the states? I mean, what would happen to them if they got caught by Border Control after they crossed?

They traveled to Mexico a couple of Christmas' in a row and they loved it so much, they moved there. Now this crap happens and it totally turns them off to Mexico. They should have known, though. Don't get the police involved if you can avoid it.
