Do you give your immediate boss/supervisor a Christmas gift or
go in on a group gift?

DH and I were discussing it this morning. He's been hit up for double the amount over the last couple years and we were thinking it's getting to be a bit much. Prior years involved taking the boss and his wife to a nice restaurant and paying for their meal/drinks/tip etc, still leaving a significant amount which was placed on a gift card to the store of the Boss's choice.

1. We are pretty much forbidden from doing that where I work
due to the nature of our work and due to the field we are in, so thankfully it's not an issue

4. We've always gone in on a gift for the manager and assistant manager
Usually gifts certs to a restaurant or something like that. This year the nitwit who is collecting is trying to get the 1st assistant manager on there too. We've never included that position and I don't want to - it's not really an official management position and there have been a lot more deserving people in it than the moran who is currently (and some of those more deserving still work there in other capacities so I see it as an insult to them).

In short, there's always some kind of stupid office politics drama associated with any of this stuff. ~sigh~

5. Yes, but...
...it's just something small and just from me, not the group. I'm giving my staff some small but nice presents tomorrow, and I'll bring my boss' gift in too. He gave me one today that was very nice and not costly. I like the way people do things around here. :)

6. We take up a collection to give a group gift to our boss every year.
We do the same for our project manager (who is the boss' brother) and some of us (myself included) have at various times over the years given an individual gift, also. This is in a small company and they are very generous to all of us as far as gifts and Christmas bonuses are concerned.

7. What? It's the boss that should be taking staff to a fancy lunch.
I'd be embarrassed otherwise. I'm only as good as my staff.

Power is given to the boss by the staff. It does not come with the position.

8. Neither
The only gift I give my immediate supervisor is the gift of my non-presence for three days in a row.

9. Nope
I gave gifts to those whose boss I am, which seems more the right way round to me.

I sent my boss a card, but I also sent them to just about everybody in the office.

11. Yes
this year we have a new boss and the whole department (4 women) give him a coffee pot which says "Chef" (German for boss) since we call him "Cheffe" in a jokingly way.

12. fortunately for me my boss knows how much financial trouble I'm in
so I'm sure she understands that I'm not getting her anything this year. I've always have gotten something small for my bosses in the past.

I do however give little somethings for my staff.

13. Only if I'm making something by hand that year
I make Christmas balls - small handpainted enamel Christmas scenes on frosted glass ornaments, and those I've given to whoever I was working for. But I haven't been able to find the balls live or on the internet for a few years, so that's stopped.

But I wouldn't buy anything.

I do go in on the staff gift to the Admins, and I give jewelry (again handmade) to the women whose jobs support mine. It's always nice to see them wearing it -- last year someone noticed a co-worker's earrings, and she said "Oh, Minerva made me these, aren't they nice?" and I had to pipe up "no she didn't, I did!" (Minerva is an Admin who makes jewelry that's a lot more creative than mine, so I took it as a compliment, but I wanted credit!)

16. No, on this level I believe in trickle-down
the bosses can give themselves their own gifts. And frequently do, from what I see of new cars, laptops, cameras, 2 week trips to the southern pacific.

19. I've got too many bosses to even think about it.
Though I'm considering giving a copy of one of my books to one of them...maybe once I figure out who'd appreciate it the most.

20. It was "mandatory" at a company where I used to work.
We got an email from the company book keeper who told us to either give her cash for the bosses gift or she would take it out of our paychecks.

I got out of that bullshit operation as quickly as I could.

22. My boss in my masters supervisor.
Edited on Fri Dec-21-07 03:25 PM by Evoman
I always get him a nice gift (usually about 30 bucks) because he has been such an important part of my life and a great mentor. I still work for him (finishing up some research). He always gets everyone in the lab something too.

Oh yeah, and I also give my landlord a christmas present...and I pay 50 less than anybody else in the building . Sometimes it pays to suck up/be friendly.

and he buys me one, too. Then we finish those and buy our own from them on. Pretty much like most of our business lunches.
