40m take to the roads in Christmas exodus

By Graham Tibbetts and Lucy Cockcroft Last Updated: 12:01am GMT 20/12/2007

More than 40 million people will take to the roads on Friday as the Christmas exodus gets under way amid warnings the country’s groaning infrastructure will grind to a halt.

Transport experts have calculated that gridlock is most likely to strike at 3pm as a record number of people taking advantage of a full two-week festive break make their way to visit friends and relatives.

The M25 should see a lot of traffic

Motorists will have to contend with 36 sets of roadworks, some of the worst on a long stretch of the M25 in the south east.

Rail passengers will be no better off as engineering works have blighted many major routes.

1. Maybe the jams would be better if they were on the correct side.
Just to make it clear, that's 40 million people on the roads in a country the size of the average US state.

3. The English describe the M25 as the
biggest parking lot in the world.

The worst traffic jam I've heard of (but fortunately not experienced) is Black Saturday in France.

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Saturday_(France)...

"Autoroute du Soleil, the highway to the south of France and Spain is usually particularly busy. In 2004 there was more than 700 km in accumulated traffic congestion."

Travelers can literally spend more than 24 hours in that little baby.

4. Did you ever notice...
that nations where they drive on the wrong side of the road are either a) isolated islands (UK, Japan, Australia, etc.) or b) isolated countries surrounded by harsh terrain like desert or mountains?

Gotta keep the crazies isolated, doncha know? :-)
