You know what? I DO CARE that Jamie Lynn Spears is 16 and pregnant.
Edited on Wed Dec-19-07 12:46 PM by LibraLiz1973
Frankly, I find it mildly distressing.

Not because she's 16 and pregnant, though that is sad. Lots and lots of people have had children at a young age. Some persevere and do well, and some do not. I think we can all agree that being 16 and pregnant (and that's a pretty FRESH 16 by the way... her birthday is in August. She doesn't even have a drivers license yet)isn't the way things should be done. Teen pregnancy isn't a joke. It's very, very serious. For girls that aren't in the financial situation Jamie Lynn is, it can destroy their lives- and,the life of an innocent child.

Jamie Lynn's idea of being responsible is to give an interview (with her proud mother :puke:) to OK! magazine. In the months to come I expect we will be subjected to photos of Jamie Lynn as she grows in pregnancy. And stories like: The baby showers! The doctor visits! The ultrasounds! The cravings! The nursery! Oh, won't it be TOO CUTE!! What will she name her baby? Will she be a better mom than her sister? Will she marry her 19 year old LIVE IN boyfriend? Oh, it's too fabulous!! How will Jamie Lynn deal with high school? Oh my gosh, she does it all!! Look how easy it is!!

And then the birth. Her agreement with OK! magazine is that when the baby is born she will receive one million dollars for a photo spread. Jamie Lynn and her precious baby- I'm sure grand mama Spears will be in those photos. What a happy family.

Here's what upsets me. MOST 16 year olds aren't going to get a million dollars for a photo spread. MOST 16 year olds are not in the financial position Jamie Lynn is. But here's Jamie Lynn... 16 and pregnant. And for a lot of immature young ladies, it's going to look cute. It's going to look easy. It's going to look romantic.

I think handling it the way she has sets a REALLY bad example. I wonder how many Zoey 101 fans will end up knocked up because they think it would be adorable to have a baby like Jamie Lynn. How many of those girls who end up pregnant do you think will have it as easy as Jamie Lynn? Not alot, I would bet. Teen pregnancy is a tough road to hoe. I don't think making it look easy is the answer.

The Spears family is like a fucking plague on society. It's just horrifying.

1. I guess all we can do is hope that OK magazine loses money on this deal
I get that you care, and I care, and for the same reasons....

but I won't buy a magazine to find out all about Jaime Lynn or her baby.

If people stopped paying attention to this stuff, then the magazines and the stars themselves would't be rewarded monetarily for their miserable behavior.

4. About the last line of your rant...
I would say the plague on society is the celebrity media that covers the Spears family as though what happens to them has any bearing on the rest of our lives.

6. That's true
The Spears family is fucking ridiculous but we wouldn't know about any of it
if the paparazzi didn't follow them like they were actually INTERESTING.

12. it's not just the paparazzi
photographers make money when they can sell a photo... media outlets pay for photos

media outlets recoup that money through subscriptions and advertisements....

this is a for-profit thing.

people DO pay attention to this stuff, otherwise, no one would ever make any money and the paparazzi would be out of work.

it's up to the public to end this.

5. "A tough road to hoe"
Shame on me for laughing at that.

But you convinced me. It's big deal cause she's in the spotlight. I don't think it's so much a problem that girls will be going out and getting pregnant cause of this. But what will happen is that a lot of kids who end up pregnant won't arrange abortions or adoptions like they should at that age.

7. I'm currious about one aspect of this.
A black high school student spent 2 years in jail for getting a blowjob when he was 2 years older that the girl. He was 17 and she was 15.

Jamie Lynn Spears is 16 (underage) and her boyfriend is 18 (an adult). Is the law sniffing around them too? And if not, then what's the difference? If it's because Jamie Lynn is rich and/or white then what does that say about the law?

BTW: I certainly don't think the law should be poking its nose into this situation at all, nor should they have poked their nose into that other situation. I was just struck by the contrast because of the vast disparity in the way people can be treated.

8. Actually, I think the law SHOULD get involved.
I think her mother should be arrested for letting her 16 year old daughter have a LIVE IN 19 year old boyfriend.
What the fuck did she think was going to happen??

I agree with you about the contrast though.

17. Probably not, though they should be.
Let's see... your a parent.
As such, you are obligated to keep your child safe and secure.
Does letting someone live with your daughter and bang her whenever good parenting?

20. That's the part I don't get
teens have sex and you can't control them 24/7 to make sure they don't but you sure as hell have a responsibility to try and letting your 16 year old have a live-in boyfriend is a hideous shirking of parental responsibility. What I tell my daughters is this - if you're not mature enough to use reliable birth control you are NOT mature enough to have sex. End of story.

14. In California there's a three year window for consensual sex
If the person is within three years of your age it is ok to have sex with them.

21. Different jurisdictions
The other case was in Georgia, iirc. She's in California, and they don't prosecute out here unless the girl's parents raise all kinds of hell.

15. I agree
I find it appalling that the popular press is going to use this young woman's predicament to sell advertising.

Forget prosecuting this young man. Her parents should be pilloried for irresponsible parenting. Did they bother to teach her about reproduction - including birth control - or did they count on "Christian Parenting" to keep her pure? Wake up, people! For centuries we've been telling teens not to have sex, and they're still doing it. The biological urge that keeps the species going is a powerful one, even when there's already too many of us.

We need to give our kids the knowledge they need to protect themselves. Anything else is criminal negligence.

Sheesh. And Jocelyn Elders got fired for suggesting masturbation might not be all that bad an idea. It's the one thing for which I can never forgive the Clenis - and both he and Miss Spears would probably be better off if they'd taken Elder's advice.

People magazine online already has a little article asking Liz Lange how she would dress Jamie Lynn throughout her pregnancy. I can not believe this shit.
