Am I the only one who wishes December didn't exist?
I guess if you have kids or family this time of year is a fun thing, but to me it's just stressful and depressing and pointless. I say we go right from the moderately depressing November to the moderately depressing January and skip the mega depressing December from now on. This month seems to just be going on and on and we're only half way through it. I'm not feeling the joy. :(

1. I can empathize with you.
I find it's a struggle to know just what to do with the week of Christmas and New Year, especially since I'm working at a time when many people expect to have time off.

I hope you find something that works for you. Take care of yourself; you deserve it.

2. My life is dictated by the liturgical calendar.
I love lighting the Advent candles, singing Christmas carols, etc.

In fact, it seems to me that what you need is a chocolate Advent calendar. A little piece of chocolate every day for the whole month of December. Makes every day a bit nicer.

Hope your December improves.

22. I've done that over thanksgiving a quite a few times in the past.
It's not a bad idea but I'm not sure I really want to be around anyone at all right now, even for a good cause like that. And I'm one misstep away from being in that same boat, and I don't think I need such a strong reminder of my potential future at the moment.

I'll have to think about it though. It may still be good. Thanks for the suggestion.

50. PEOPLE are the answer
On this season seek out people who are hurt/needless more than you

Or buy a bottle of Vodka and feel even more miserable.

4. I'd get rid of January, personally
(Sorry to anyone with a birthday in that month!) I always find January to be the most depressing month. It always just seems very drab and endless. December at least has the possibility of being exciting to me; occasionally I'll still feel slightly in the spirit at Xmastime, but there's nothing to look forward to during January.

5. I'd choose to eliminate February
crappy weather and WTF is up with only 28 days? I'm sorry but can't we just even that shit out? And then there's that lovely "holiday" to remind singletons that nobody loves us.

Sorry that you're feeling depressed about December though. I have kids and I must admit that it's their excitement that makes me enjoy it, otherwise it would be tedious for me as well. Doesn't help matters that the days are so short and we don't get enough sunshine.

6. I hear ya
I wait for the holidays to be over. I just don't like it and since I have become a non-consumer, (or minimal consumer) all I see is stuff that will end up in the landfills.

I have bought one present over the net so far but it is made of recyclable materials. I also give money to charities in honor of people. Not too many because I just don't have many people in my life lately.

But other than that.....I'm staying home and waiting for January.

33. I seriously loathe IT....
....yesterday made me even more depressed...I was gettin' my mail and this old lady across the street asked me if I'd run her up to Dollar General....I said sure no problem....all she could buy was ONE roll of t-paper and a bar of soap....she lives with her no account daughter and is basically rasing her two sons....I brought her back home then went back to the store and got them a 6pk of double rolls and some candy and cookies for the boys and gave her 40 bucks to get them something from Santa...she just kept hugging me...met the kids when they got off the bus...just sweeties...when she told them to tell me thank you...they both hugged and kissed me too....

Should make me feel better about doing what Christmas is supposed to be about but makes me angry because there are too many who go without....when you're promised from birth to get your hearts desire every Dec. 25th....but because your mother is more concerned with gettin' a man instead of caring for the ones she created by two other men.....GODDAMMIT....anyway...made me feel great and sick at the same time nevertheless.

38. Yeah, it's pretty messed up everywhere.
I get upset seeing kids going without too. Just one of many depressing things about this time of year.

What you did was pretty cool though. It would be nice if we could just change it with a snap of the fingers but we can't, so what you did is a good thing. At least you made someone's season a bit nicer, and that's about all we can expect from one person.

There was a cool story on the news here last week. A guy was in the drive through of a Dunkin Donuts or something getting coffee and the guy in line behind him was honking and complaining. Instead of getting mad the first guy paid for the guy's coffee. That guy did the same for the next customer, and it ended up going on all day like that, one customer paying for the next. It was pretty cool to see such a small example of kindness take off like that.

10. I posted a similar thread last night, but I won't revive it out of respect for you...
The holidays are a tough time for many of us. We're all expected to revere our families, when our families are sometimes our greatest source of pain.

My only consolation is that I know that my parents didn't have the blue-print I needed them to have. I'm a grown man now & I can't blame my folks for their failings (although a part of me still wants to; I had an horrifically abusive childhood).

Mom died from bad doctoring three years ago & Dad isn't long for this world. Dad is in such arthritic pain that OxyContin can't touch it.

There comes a time when we see our parents as people first. I might not see my Dad again in this world.

He was a bad father to me, but I love him. I guess he did the best he knew how. Too bad he had a cookie cutter mentality. I'm in his corner now - he's in pain.

18. Sorry to hear about all that.
For me my family isn't a problem. We're not close but we get along, but we also don't bother getting together for any holidays, which is ok by me. For me there's just too much on my mind coming into this month to start with, and X-Mas was pretty much ruined for me a few years ago. I really hate this month.

I'm sorry to hear about your dad. I had a lot of problems with my parents too, and it took a long time to see that they may have been lousy parents but they were still good people. In my situation there was no abuse...there were no parents around at all to do it.

I hope you can find some peace with things.

but my birthday was Sunday, so I like December. Winter should end on January 2nd though - I could do without all of that.

I understand the depression thing, as I have spent Christmas by myself more than a few times. I guess the key for me was to just make the best of it, and enjoy the day off if nothing else.

Even though I now have a family and a kid.

I think the half dozen years or so when I was living on my own after high school did it to me. Christmas was the worst time of year for me. I don't get as depressed now as I did back then, but I still have to fight my way out of what I call the "Black Funk". It hit me pretty hard yesterday, and I'm still gritting my teeth to get through it, and not let it affect the mood of the rest of my family. :(

I'm actually glad I don't get together with my family in some ways. We get along but aren't really close. It seems like forced fun, like we do it just we because we're supposed to. It strikes me as phony in many ways, and always made me uncomfortable.

Now, I just don't feel it anymore. I want to get back to that spiritual connection I used to feel. A connection to the season, the spirit of being with family and friends, and to reflect on the things I was grateful for. Now, I seem to count the days until it's over. Corporatism has bled it dry for me. Makes people act like rabid idiots. Fighting each other to buy, buy, BUY! I made my own Christmas cards this year, 20 of them, original artwork and everything, and I don't even feel proud of the accomplishment. Feels somehow like it's not enough. Man, I'm one fucked up Grinchy Mc-Scrooge.
