22. That's awesome..

As a bad occasional guitar player, I've wondered what are the odds of a bad occasional guitar player having any skills transferable to bad occasional banjo playing?

34. Being a bad occasional banjo picker is easy!
Especially if you're already a bad occasional guitar player!

Seriously, there are some transferable skills (I play guitar, dobro, mandolin, and bass also - some fiddle but I don't admit to it usually because when I pull the bow across the strings it sounds like a cat somewhere is dying a painful death!). You already know how to fret a string properly, you're already familiar with most of the tuning, although the banjo is tuned to open G (but the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th strings are the same as on guitar). You're already accustomed to the coordination between what the left and right hands are doing. If you fingerpick the guitar, that certainly carries over. For most guitarists who play with a flatpick, going to fingerpicking is the hardest part.

You might want to consider a 6-string banjo - Deering makes one - that is basically a guitar that sounds like a banjo, sort of as a transition.

Good luck!

38. I have a lot of respect for banjo players

but what, really, is the point of those tambourine-like metal things? I've never seen a banjo player use the instrument for percussion.

I'm thinking at this point that it is easier to go from being a bad guitar player to a so-so ukele player, though.

Having been raised listening to continuous Flatt & Scruggs, the idea of even attempting to play the banjo is intimidating.

Maybe I should find some recordings of bad banjo to make me feel as if it would be worthwhile.

51. Well, I won the Galway Kinnell 16th Annual Poetry Prize, presented by Joshua Bell

on behalf of the Rhode Island Council of the Arts.

Oh, and I got $500.00!! (In poetry, you usually get "paid" in copies or at a very miserly rate.
So this was HUGH111111! Series.

Also won the "International Publication Prize" from the Atlanta Review, in recognition of "outstanding
poetic achievement" in the international poetry competition.

AND (as mentioned previously in this thread while I was still being modest) don't forget my Good Posture Certificate
in third grade. Framed and on my wall. Honest!

P.S. And - HIGHEST HONOR OF ALL - I've had the good fortune to have gotten about 10 or 11 DUzys!! (How could I
not have put that FIRST? My brain must be addled by all the pre-Christmas eggnog tasting).

53. I was one of two students in my high school that got a perfect score on
the stupid Florida Writes essay we had to do. I don't even remember what it was about. All I know is that rather than actually trying to improve kids' writing skills by TEACHING them, the state of Florida just made a few ridiculous requirements about how kids had to write something in every class and then we had the Florida Writes contest. They didn't require that the kids be TAUGHT how to write. Just that they had to write something. (*&%ing Florida school systems... then they wonder why only 2 out of several thousand kids got a perfect score on the damn thing.

Yeah, that's about all I can think of offhand. :P

I've never been all that competitive.
