Ever write to Mexico?
I need to send a letter to Mexico. I checked the USPS website, and it says that a letter of this weight will cost $.69 to send international first class. What it doesn't say is whether I can just stick any stamps in that amount on it, or if I still need a special "International First Class" stamp.

Anyone know?

1. All I know is that invariably whatever choice you make will be the wrong one.

Especially if you call the post office and ask someone there. :P

3. You can just put the stamps on it - and put an extra one for
good measure...

7. All I know is what I have experienced
I've had these discussions with the post office, and this is what I was told:

The international stamps are designed for that specific purpose.

Domestic stamps are for domestic use.

There are multiple reasons why domestic stamps may not work:

Sometimes domestic stamps do not show the denomination.
Sometimes domestic stamps do not show the country of origin.
Sometimes domestic stamps have images that may be considered offensive in other countries.

At any rate, here is the link to the mailing restrictions to Mexico.

8. Thanks. I looked at that page before posting.
I'm not arguing. And your info makes sense. Just noting a difference of opinion. I'll just go see the people who are supposed to know for sure. I really do appreciate your input.

10. OTOH, This link says any first class stamp is okay
The big problem is not going to be the regulations, but the clerk you end up dealing with at the post office. The nice thing about the international stamps is that they absolutely cannot argue with you about whether or not they are the right stamps.

11. Good to know! Thanks!
This is just going to Matamoros, which is practically Texas. So it shouldn't be hard to get it there. Thanks!

18. You can use regular stamps for any foreign letters.
But, as others have said, the international stamps will alleviate the risk that some postal worker jackass in the other country won't take offense at a stamp or decide that they don't like it and just toss your letter in the trash.

I think you're being unreasonably optimistic.
