I hate all wheel drive
Gots to buy four new tires because of one flat.

Oh well.

Pity disused rubber isn't edible.

1. Why do you have to replace all 4 of the tires?

Why can't you just get a new one and rotate all of them?

4. I tried that.

They said my remaining tires looked good.

Unfortunately, the replacement tire results in the car veering to one side.

This is due to the newer tire's new treads being longer; the result is the veering.

They told me on first visit the typical procedure is to replace all 4. (but the other 3 tires were in very good shape, so there was no harm in trying.)

When I came back and told them the story, they were shocked only one tire was swapped.

I've no hard feelings and they've done good, legit service before.

3. Absolute scam.
If the tires are relatively new, a single replacement could work, otherwise the most you should need to buy is two. Now, if all of the other tires are badly worn, that's another story.

6. Maybe you need a front end alignment?
And have all the tires rebalanced.

8. I mentioned that to them when they replaced the tire.
They were probably balanced and aligned, but they definitely were not rotated.

7. I first had my suspicions
http://www.4x4abc.com/4WD101/diffautoAWD_AWD.html

Well guys, some older automatic AWD vehicles will need 4 new tires when one is beyond repair (given that the three remaining ones are at 50% or less of their life) - however, if one is bad and the others are still pretty good, you may replace only the bad one.
Same thing if 2 are worn down and the other two are still decent (70% or better) - you don't have to buy 4 new ones. If 2 are worn out and the other ones are at 50% or less you will have to buy 4 new tires

It sounds like I may only need 2 replaced rather than all 4, I'll agree...

They have passed over half their warranty limit and I've driven almost 30k miles.

Users on the internet say their same model tires went from 20~50k miles.

All in all, I'm not going to feel terribly bad about my decision.

9. I can't see why you'd need to replace more than 2
a mismatch between the front and back would cause a veer to the front or back - aka acceleration and braking.

10. All of our cars for years have been AWD
and we've never had to replace all four tires for one flat.
