I found DU from a link from following a Salon.com article that went to a blog and DU was there. I think. I was soooo pissed off after 2000, I had to find a place to vent that total disbelieving pissed-offedness. I was also active in that time until the beginning of the March 2003 invasion of Iraq. I left after 2003 cause I needed a break from all the aggravation because things went from back to worse in this nation. Then, for some strange reason, I thought, hey, I'll go by and see what's up at DU and find out that kephra just died. went to his funeral and then was really busy and then one day I thought... hey, I'll go by and see what's up at DU....

what a long, strange trip it's been living in the Bush age.

20. Meh. I was here well before General Discussion Politics was invented

There was just "General Discussion" period, but as things got heated in the leadup to 2004, a way to separate the nice people from the haterz (politicos you could say) needed to be found. GD-P was the result.

I forget how I found out about this place, I think it was a Dailykos post that led me to it.

Also, I started reading Talkingpointsmemo during the post 2000 election debacle. I think I found that by reading Kausfiles.

Observation: As an avid news/political junkie, 5 years ago, I read Wash Post, NY Times, Kausfiles, New Republic and Howie Kurtz because that was much of what was widely available out there. I don't know when I realized that Kaus was just flat wrong about his media observations, but it got annoying and then, the blogs and DU came along.

I would say I get most of my news from DU, blogs and wire coverage and more indepth stories from Wash Post, NY Times and actually, blog comments and DU comments that have backstory that doesn't get picked up anywhere else. And I'm better informed for it.

And though I read some news from NYTimes and Wash Post, it's probably limited to one article or column per week from each. And that hasn't hurt me a bit. Their reliance on the "he said"/"she said" coverage without the attendant, but he is a big liar coverage made the news hard to comprehend or sort out.

But the blogs do and despite getting news from them, I don't find myself in agreement with them in all things, so I must be doing some of my own thinking.

The MSM is still not getting the utility of the blogsphere.

I was totally cool, just not much of a Kerry fan when 04 came around, (Yeah, i voted for the dude, but it was HARD) so I took a dive and just came back to posting lately, though I have always really been here. Salon went pay to post and I'd been hanging for a short time at a place called Bare Knuckles Politics. There was some link to DU that turned up one day and I came over here and poked around for a bit--then I registered.

I think Ulysses got here right about the same time I did and Kephra came soon after. There was still an Underground and there was NO such thing as a "Lounge" or even GD.

My one claim to fame is that the first EVER DU gathering was held at my house. Elad was supposed to come but had to cancel. Kephra was here and so was 5thGenDemocrat.

I first discovered Democratic Underground, if I remember correctly, right after it first came online in January 2001. I don't recall how I specifically found DU; I remember discovering a number of Democratic/liberal/progressive web sites right at that time, and DU was one of them (along with www.democrats.com as I remember, and along with some sites that are now defunct, including mediawhoresonline).

I enjoyed reading the articles and some of the posts for over a year, and finally registered in April 2002. My first post was May 1, 2002 (I have been able to locate it in the archives), and I have been posting ever since (even if not as frequently as other DUers).
