Started out in geology, but couldn't understand inorganic chemistry.
Tried computer graphics software programming next; couldn't understand calculus.
Got a 2-year AAS in Drafting Technology right when the oil bust hit Houston in 1984; couldn't get a job.
Went back to school on parent's dime since they were offering and got a BA in Graphic Design and Liberal Arts. Found out I couldn't stand working with clients that wanted the Moon for the price of a burger. I did have a great job as the Graphic Artist for a computer game company only to learn they always laid everyone off just after Christmas, even my job.
Took more drafting classes in the early years of CAD (Computer Aided Drafting) but hardly any companies were using the software yet. Architects all did their own CAD and oil bidness was very much into nepotism.
Was unemployed for a couple of years and did lots of cooking and baking during that time. Found I had a knack for it and took pastry and baking classes. Had one fairly good pastry cook job for a year at $7 an hour and that was the most I was ever paid in the food industry for the next couple of years, when I could find work at all.
Took another class in AutoCAD as I was working as a DJ at a commercial station in transition between formats and finally got back into drafting. Ten years later all this schooling and on-the-job-training got me the position of Sr Piping Mapper :D

So, to answer the question, I have one and a half degrees and five majors

I have a great book on food science and lore and in the back, the author (Harold McGee) has an appendix on organic chemistry. He's so good at describing how it works that I found it easy when compared to the dryness of inorganic. But, everyone has different ways of thinking. The dry theory stuff is the best way to put me to sleep or put me in a trance

Art or drafting on the other hand is my forte. I'll leave the science to the scientists and researchers :)

I've always thought that writing for a living was an odd career.

The writing has to be the most rewarding part, but because the actual writers are the bottom of the totem pole you are driven to get out of writing and into the more boring, administrative, but safer careers higher up.

I know two people who LOVE being editors, but most writers love and miss the writing. :shrug:

I have a kind of unusual position. I was on the sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll beat until May (wrote the paper's music column), and since I've stopped it, anytime I find something that I'd like to write about, I can pretty much go ahead and do it, then pass it along to my boss, who edits it.

So, it's not as if I don't get to write anymore. In fact, I have more freedom to write about what I want than I used to. I'm just on a bit of a hiatus after three years of hanging out in bars and clubs till 4 a.m. and writing about it.

Got a vocational ed 2-year degree in Court reporting (stenography) which was pretty difficult, but fortunately I had a knack for it -- great English skills and years of piano playing.

B.A. in Biology from a well known liberal arts school (They didn't offer the B.S. and the B.A. was a bit easier) with minors in Art and Sociology. Majored in music for a while but didn't want to spend 4 hours a day in a practice room, and the competition was tough. Glad I didn't do that; playing in a symphony orchestra is like being part of a human jukebox and totally uncreative.

I liked fine arts and liberal arts much better, and made better grades, but the parental units demanded I get a REAL science degree -- sociology and psych were black arts to them.

Juris Doctor -- standard law degree.

The only one of those degrees that got me a job was the court reporting - I did that for a number of years until I got burned out. The stress from dealing with nasty judges and lawyers made me run off screaming.

Now, how you get a job as a legal assistant when you're over 40 is beyond me. Even if you've seen a million trials and know procedure and evidence and pleadings COLD -- on autopilot.

But underneath it all I am creative and don't fit into Cubicle World at all.

I majored in Spanish after having lived and studied in Spain.
I wanted a major that wouldn't stress me out while I has having
fun taking courses in stuff that interested me, like Psych,
Anthropology, Linguistics, Swedish, Russian, German and other stuff.

No way I should have been offered a cool job after a useless academic
career like that, but there is no justice, and now, 30 years later,
I'm still with the same outfit that recruited me a year after graduation,
and now I'm station chief for Europe. Go figure!

My Bachelor's degree (BA) was in Mathematics, with a Minor in Physics; my Master's degree (MS) was in Computer Science. Both were from San Diego State University, in 1972 and 1979 respectively.

I was always good with numbers and mathematics since I was a kid, so math was the natural major for me. I decided to go with Computer Science for my Master's degree, since that is where the jobs were.

I know I would have done a hell of a lot better as well in college. If I had to offer a piece of advice for any freshman, I'd tell them to major in what is closest to their passion and what truly interests them and not to be too concerned about "expected starting salaries" and such crap.
