22. I went Christmas shopping...
went to Toys R Us and Target. Found exactly what I needed. Got in and out of BOTH stores in less than 90 minutes. Was home by 7:30 and completely beat the rush.

And now I'm *almost* done with the Christmas shopping! :woohoo:

Now I'm sitting here playing with my new hair straightener. Thrilling, I know. ;)

23. Looking for a place to say hello!
It's my first post!

My name's John. I've read Democratic Underground's Latest Breaking News forum for a long time now, but I've always just lurked. But lately there are so many things I've wanted to comment on that I decided to take the plunge, so here I am! :)

Some things I don't know:

-- is there any kind of "meet and greet" forum? I know that you guys deal with a lot of trolls all the time. Is there some place where a new poster like me can make introductions or I dunno.... sorta ease his way into the community?

-- I don't think I can make posts right away, isn't that right? That seems to make sense.

I dunno.... what other things do you veterans think I should know?

25. welcome to DU - for the meet and greet - you came to the right place.
The Lounge is more light hearted than GD, GDP and LBN.

Post in a few threads, get silly, and pull up the beverage of your choice.

Glad to have you here!

29. I am dealing with some fairly rough criticism
of my work from a friend of the family who is also a teacher and a published poet...

It's proving hard to deal with...

Esp. following hard on the heels of my teacher's praise this morning...

I don't want to lose my mojo...

But I find myself questioning my ability...

:-(

31. What I have to remember when faced with such things.
First off, your professor liked your work. Your professor is a professional and knows what he/she is talking about.

Second, you gave it your best effort. You were proud of your effort, and THAT is the most important thing.

Third, you will only lose your mojo to that situation if you let what your family member says bother you. All teaching and publishing aside, you do not know the true motivation for why he/she feels the need to harshly criticize your work.

33. The family friend (she) is a teacher too...
And I honestly believe she is trying to help me.

But the way she went about it....well...

I don't respond well to negative criticism, I'm afraid...

She did give some concrete advice, and after I'm over being hurt, I will most likely try it...

Thanks...

35. Your faith in yourself and your ability is worth more than her criticism.
I know it is hard for you to let it roll off you. The harshness is her issue, not yours, and unfortunately, because she was harsh, anything constructive she had to offer got veiled by the bluntness of her words. Do NOT take it to heart. Life is too short.

38. Planning meals for the coming hella-day.
We'll have both my folks and the in-laws here for several days plus aunts, uncles, cousins and their kids visiting starting Saturday and running through Wednesday. My poor husband's Birthday is on the 26th and I'll be too wiped out to even think about having a party for him this year.

:hi:

How's your weather out there?
