Suggestion to people who have secretaries and assistants

If it's between the hours of 12 and 2 and you see your assistant or secretary at their desk AND THEY ARE EATING - don't come up to them and give them work, pretend that they're not there.

Many people eat at their desks instead of going out of the office for lunch. Because a) maybe they're trying to save $ and brown bagging it b) maybe they're surfing the net during their lunch hour c) it's winter and it's too frigging cold to go out.

In most cases people aren't getting paid for that hour - leave them the heck alone.

And if you know my boss - please pass on the wisdom on to him.

1. Some Bosses

Some bosses interrupt their secretaries when they are eating a picnic lunch outside the building. It's worse for word processing managers.

2. My assistant complains about this all the time.

Of course, I want him to quit :)

But seriously, if your supervisor hands you something to work on, just say "I'll take a look at that after lunch". If it's a project he wants to discuss with you, just ask, "Can we discuss this after I get done with my lunch break?" If you don't point out that you're off the clock he may just assume that you're having lunch on his schedule (i.e. "whenever I get a minute to grab something").

Of course, if he insists on making you work anyway, just make note of the time and leave that much earlier (or claim it as OT). It is illegal for him to make you work without pay.

3. take your lunch somewhere else

not blaming you, obviously your boss is a nitwit, but if he can't find you, he can't give you work.

If he asks where you were, tell him you were on your legally mandated meal break.

5. he also likes to read me articles from the NY Post

Says he likes to see what the opposition is saying. He's actually a very liberal, normally cool guy.

He has a two hour commute in the morning, so he's been up for hours when I arrive and he tried to talk to me about politics and movies before I've had coffee.

The worst thing is he'll start telling me about a movie I haven't seen and I'll tell him to stop and he says, but I'm not really giving anything away and keep going.

Still - it's all meager stuff, glad to have a job and food to be eating to get interrupted during the eating off.
