Let's hear 10 things...
That most of DU does not know about you.

SOteric did a post like this a while ago, and it was one of the most interesting threads I've read since I've been here. And since imitation is the most sincere form of flattery, I thought I would start another one. But all credit for this idea belongs to SOteric.

I'll start:

1. I've never been skinny dipping. Probably rooted in my fear of water.

2. My wife has never seen me drunk. We've been married for 10 years, together for 13.

3. I live near a small airport where the Blue Angels appear during an annual air show every summer - I get to watch them from my back yard.

4. I like to go antiquing, but don't get to very often.

5. I am right handed. But I eat left handed. Just feels more natural, that's all.

6. I am a smart ass, descended from a long, distinguished line of smart asses. I worry that I offend other DU'ers with my smart-ass comments sometimes...

7. I am the youngest of three children.

8. The last time I was tested, I had a relatively high IQ. It's just that "motivation and applying myself " part that held me back a little.

9. I just don't understand hockey. Kinda like going to games occasionally, but I don't know what the hell is going on.

10. In college, I was one letter grade (in a specific class) away from changing my major to telecommunications. If I had failed that test, you may have had the chance to listen to me do overnights in some small market oldies station in Boise, Idaho. But I got a 'B' on the test instead.

Let's hear 10 things about YOU...

2. Why not?
1. Many mornings I secretly wish I had followed in Dad's footsteps and become a third-generation plumber.

2. About twice a month I suffer from "toast madness", where I devour nearly half a loaf (or more) first thing.

3. I own a wine corker, although I have no intention of making my own wine.

4. My old boss the chef (and his wife) are still good friends of mine, and probably twice a month they ask when I'm coming back to work for them again.

5. Now that I'm working from home, I harbor a secret guilt about the electricity and NG I now use to heat the house during the day.

6. I built a special cabinet that hangs from the ceiling in the kitchen, just to display the old, old crystal stuff from grandma; and I love using it for no special reason!

7. I torment my dogs from time to time with a remote-controlled M1A1 tank I built.

8. In my youth I owned a dual 24" subwoofer cabinet that was attached to my guitar rig, and I played in the loudest band the Bay Area had ever seen. I wish I hadn't sold it, because no home theater will ever compare.

9. One of my fondest memories was driving away from a town with everything I owned in the back of my little pickup. I now have a basement full of crap.

10. My newest joy is sending Mrs. Robb flowers at work. I heartily recommend this to everyone who's got a special someone.

4. I'm not interesting enough to come up with 10 but...
1) I didn't have a TV for 13 years, and didn't miss it at all.

2) I never go grocery shopping... I eat out every day (one meal). And I'm still fat!

3) I worry more about how my yard looks than the inside of my house. I am no housekeeper!

4) The Super Bowl was the only football game I saw all season.

5) I hate exercise, because I hate to sweat.

6) I like beer... A lot!

6. OK here's mine:
1. I was adopted and just met my birthmom when I was 41 (it's cool!)
2. I once met the King of Norway (King Olav the Fifth); I got to give him a bouquet to welcome him to our town when he visited.
3. I love reading children's books, especially if they were favorites of mine when I was a kid.
4. I hate hate hate hate hate hate hate the telephone. No sound in the world annoys me more than the ringing of a phone.
5. If I could go back to school and study anything I wanted, I would go back and take interior design classes (I was a psych major first time around).
6. I get cabin fever really easy; I need to get out of the house frequently, and I love being in a new place I have never seen before...I road cruise a lot.
7. I hate sunshine in the winter; it's depressing. Between December 15th or so, and the end of February, I would just as soon not see the sun. And it's really hard to drive when the sun is out and there is a lot of snow.
8. I tend to be a terrible procrastinator, particularly if in involves making phone calls! (Did I mention that I hate the phone?)
9. I love Scrabble and Boggle and crossword puzzles...word games fascinate me and make me feel like I am exercising my brain.
10. I once considered a call to the ministry, and planned to attend seminary, but upon prayerful reflection and some experianece working in the church, decided that my ministry needs to be just my life, not a paid position...can't do it, and I am really disgusted with most organized religion.

18. Ten things about me...
1) I'm nearly ambidextrous -- I can write legibly in two alphabets with my left hand (my dumb hand), and six with my right.

2) I just got a call for an interview with an avionics firm in Waterloo, ON because I sent them a resume *on a whim* back in November. WOO-HOO!! (Forgive me, I'm telling *everyone*!) :bounce:

3) My mom, my dad, and I all have birthdays in February. My sister's the odd one out (July), although if you do the math right, her birthday comes out as "The Number of the Beast"!

4) The farthest from home I've ever been is Oahu, Hawaii. I want to go to Europe, Japan, Thailand (specifically Phuket), and Israel, the latter to visit friends and my fiance's family!

5) I wear my wallet, keys, and watch dangling on chains from my belt loops, and I haven't lost any of them since I started doing it, either. (No, I don't do it to be fashionable.)

6) I haven't worn an actual wrist watch in years. No matter what the straps are made of, they eventually eat away the skin under the band, despite my best efforts to the contrary.

7) I own somewhere in the area of 2000 books, periodicals, and related items. This isn't enough, of course.

8) I live in the top half of a big old Edwardian house, two doors down from Frederick Grant Banting's original practice.

9) I can sew, but only medieval clothing.

10) Unless I'm wearing aforementioned medieval clothing, I *never* wear skirts, partially because I hate skirts (gender issues, in part), partially because I hate my silly atrophied calves, and partially because I hate trying to get around in the modern world while wearing skirts (busses and staircases particularly vex me).

19. Ok...
01. Like you, I have never actually been skinny dipping. Not through fear of water though, more like I am shy about stripping off in front of just anyone.

02. Not all DUers know that I was sexually, physically, and mentally abused as a kid by a family member very close to me.

03. I was very popular in an AOL chat room for many years.

04. I like to drag race.

05. I can pull apart and rebuild a V8 engine.

06. I can pannel beat and spray paint a car, even though I have never been taught how to do it.

07. I am the second eldest of four kids. Yet the youngest child to my mother.

08. I was a high school drop out. And have been regretting that for most of my adult life.

09. I am currently doing an IT course.

10. My ancestry (on my fathers side) is some how connected to Napoleon Bonaparte.

20. I feel for you about #2
My best friend in the world was sexually abused by her father as a young child. I have read up some on it in an attempt to try to help her through any lingering emotional problems but she seems to prefer to mostly ignore it which from what I have read is not the best way for a survivor to finally resolve all the deep seated issues.

It is a horrible scar that will stay for life and surprisingly much more widespread than most imagine.

45. I disagree
A victim is still a victim, whether they ignore or fail to publicly expose there victimization. I admire people who talk about it frankly, as they bring attention to others who can't yet talk about it and let them know they aren't alone. Some people may feel uncomfortable hearing about it, but they are the ones that I pity. Being a victim of any crime is nothing to hide.

...but if they make the decision just to push it aside and "get over it", then they will never really get over it.

I buried what happened to me for a great number of years. It wasn't until I met Sapphocrat did I truly begin to talk about it openly. Now, I am dealing with it, the way I should have dealt with it many years ago, and I am a better person for it. Anyone who just pushes it aside like that will have this come back and haunt them, mark my words.

23. Here is my list:

  1. I refuse to drink any wines from California and I'm hestitant for red wines from any of the American Countries (N/S). My face will turn bright red like sunburn due to allergic reaction to certain red wines. I've had it bad with both Californian Red Wines and an Chilean Red. I solve this problem by sticking mainly with Australian, New Zealand and South African Wines, none of which have ever caused this reaction.
  2. I have a severe adversion to pickles and I've been known to return meals because the waiter forgot to remove my pickle as I requested, especially if that pickle is touch my main meal (I had a meal with Ramsey last Saturday but the pick was buried under the french fries and I really didn't want to eat that many fries)
  3. I have a BS in Biology and minor in Religion. But my job is in Unix Support but I mainly do statistical analysis of our department
  4. I have a slight speech impediment which causes me to stumble over certain words. I never got it corrected because when I was in elementary school they put kids into special education if they had a speech problem, but I tested in the gifted level.
  5. I buy Soap Opera Digest every week from the Grocery store because I'm too embarassed to say I have a subscription to the magazine. I hope by posting this I'll either give in and get a subscription or quit buying the damn thing.
  6. I love watching documentaries and love the fact that my On-Demand includes A&E, History Channel, National Geographic and E!. The last 5 documentaries I've watched were about Shelter Dogs, Nazi Fugitives, Crank Abuse in Iowa, Skinheads in Alabama and the True Hollywood Story of Corey Haim
  7. My mother quit bugging me about when I would get married and have kids when she inherited a step-daughter who did all those things for her. I'm quit grateful for my stepsister for taking this burden off my shoulders
  8. My home is usually either a total pig style or the neatest place you'll ever see
  9. First president I ever unofficially voted for was Jimmy Carter. My dad let me pull the lever and I liked Jimmy cause he grew peanuts and made peanutbutter - my favorite food.
  10. I took an elective class in college called "Electing the President" in 1988 (the class was during primary season). My professor assigned me to monitor Dick Gephardt because I have no(blonde) eyebrows like him and we were both democrats.

1. I am the 5th child of 6. 3 boys first, then 3 girls so I was the middle girl. I used to have a bit of a Jan Brady thing when I was younger
:-)

2. I didn't graduate college until I was 35. I went back to college after a car accident that kept me from returning to my fabulous job at the US Post Office!!

3. I protested against the Vietnam war when I was 11 years old while one of my brothers was over there fighting. We never held it against him as he volunteered before they could draft him in the hopes he'd get a better assignment - he was wrong. He did come home - Thank God.

4. I volunteered at Bobby Kennedy's campaign office in town when I was 11. That was my first political involvement.

5. I am EXTREMELY sarcastic but hold it back if I don't know people very well because I've accidentally offended too many people before.

6. I have a degree in Computer Science and am really good in math :-)

7. My dad was an alcoholic and my parents were divorced when I was 3. He pulled himself together and we were quite close before he died.

8. I LOVE to go on cruises and have about 260 days at Sea (this is a big deal to frequent cruises). I want to work on a cruise ship actually and have applied. We'll see.

9. My closest friends are friends I have had most of my life - since I was 5 years old or so. I do have other close friends but the fact I have many from way back is a wonderful thing to me that we have always stayed in each other's lives.

10. I was a spitfire as a kid.. Here is a picture to prove it.

25. Here's mine, FWIW
1. I should be working but find DU WAY too damn addicting. It is really becoming a serious problem.

2. My dad's dad participated in the bonus march of WWI vets on DC. He later joined the communist party. They were on welfare in Chicago during the depression.

3. My other grandpa had his doctorate and was a corn breeder for Funk's G hybrid in Bloomington, Il. He traveled all over the world developing new breeds. My mom didn't know that there was a depression.

4. I was on the 12 year plan for college.

5. One of those years was spend at U of I's architectural campus in Versailles, France.

6. I seriously believe that if more murican RW types could spend an extended stay overseas they would see the USA in a new light and move to the left.

7. I have found my soulmate, I believe. Unfortunately we are both currently in bad marriages to others. (It hurts.)

8. My nickname with all my buds is "ears."

9. I bit my nails for 40 some years until a couple of years ago.

10. My mom is a rushbot.

26. Wow, - you even give me attribution!
Thanks, - but I hope everyone and anyone will feel free to use this type of question here at anytime. I think it makes us feel less abstracted from and more connected to one another.

Okay, 10 more things...Lessee:

1. I studied ballet for 14 years. I can stand on pointe. Still.

2. My home is neither very messy nor excrutiatingly neat. I aim for a level of tidy comfort and call it even.

3. I actually encourage my literature and writing students to read bad novels. Skinner will be able to confirm that there's little people love more than a chance to complain and be viscious with someone. I find they learn their lessons faster than if I hold up examples of brilliance and perfection and ask them to try to write as well.

4. I tend to do most of my cooking without recipes. It's more a matter of technique and flavour layering.

8. I love the flavour of black currant.

9. I more often wear skirts and dresses.

28. I'll try coming up with 10
1. All of my dress shirts are either white, white and blue or blue.
2. I own, at last count, over 10 wristwatches. I have a thing for old ones. The one I am wearing is a 1960s-era Omega Automatic, bought on eBay for $100. Works great, too.
3. The building across the street from mine has fire trucks and an ambulance headed into the parking lot. It doesn't appear to be on fire though.
4. Four of the vehicles I have owned were previously owned by my parents.
5. I really like mountains and tall trees. They amaze me. Of course being from Texas, land of the hills and scrubby trees, this makes sense.
6. I am an only child.
7. I have voted for exactly one Republican in my life. He stood no chance of election in his primary anyway, but he told the truth at the debates that were held, and I liked that.
8. I walk when I play golf, unless I am playing with a certain group of friends.
9. I have had the same employer since August 1992.
10. There are only two points during an airplane flight I dread. Right after take-off while the plane feels like it is struggling, and right after landing when the pilot hits the brakes.

32. I don't drink when I play golf.
I play so much when it's warm out, and I know beer dehydrates you, so I avoid it altogether. BUT, I have a walking bag with a holder that would probably fit a quart-bottle of beer, if I were so inclined. ;-)

31. Cool, dude. I'm envisioning GOPisEvil driving down the highway...
... in the parent's old station wagon, with the wood paneling look resplendent on the sides. The Meerschaum pipe is lit, and the top two buttons of the cardigan sweater are unbuttoned in a dashing, cavalier fashion...

(Don't be offended. This comes from a person who is driving a mini-van that he bought from HIS parents that is a blue-ish color. A blue that is not found in nature. Similar in hue to the eyes of the Stepford Children.);-)

Car 1 - 1980 Datsun 210 (my first car at 16, technically I never owned this car, but it was "mine"; no one else drove it.)
Car 2 - 1984 Subaru station wagon (NO PANELING!)
Car 3 - 1990 Mazda truck (a beater, but a free gift after I wrecked my only new car when it was 5 years old)
Car 4 - 1994 Infiniti G20, my current ride.

All but the truck were purchases, but at greatly reduced cost to me. :7

8. Another way I saved money when I was unemployed was to give up my car and take the bus. I walked to the grocery store with the kids in a Radio Flyer wagon (This was one of the things I was never going to admit to you. My kids get so mortified when someone in town remembers this!)
9. I once worked in an office where the boss was having an affair with his secretary; and his wife found out and shot both of them.

2. I have four parents (dad & step-mom have been married 21 years, mom & step-dad for 15)

5. I spent 12 years in a condo with a cat I was not supposed to have. (Screw their no pet rule.)

50. My ten
1. I'm the youngest of 13, counting both my late half-brother and all my stepsiblings - the youngest of 6 if you count just my full siblings.

2. My original major was political science. I changed majors to biochemistry and still haven't graduated.

5. I have a deep-seated need, almost a fetish, for expensive bed linens.

6. I bought my own home - a single-wide mobile home - at 23, and lived alone there for 10 years. Well, alone if you don't count three cats, a dog, a rabbit, seven birds, three frogs, two toads, and two salamanders.

7. I used to be a bodybuilder, till I got tired of the narcissistic aspects of it.

8. I worked for Boeing for 20 years.

54. My list...
Edited on Thu Feb-05-04 09:49 PM by fudge stripe cookays
1. I played Pontius Pilate in an 8th grade production of "Jesus Christ Superstar." Little girls had to play most of the parts since the guys weren't interested. I had short hair so it was okay.

2. My father died when I was 13.

3. One of my ancestors, Urbain Baudreau de Graveline, helped to found Montreal.

4. I met my amazing husband, reprehensor, over the internet. He still makes me all tingly after 3 1/2 years being hitched.

5. My family is remarkably dysfunctional. My brother is completely estranged from my mother and I, and my mother and I have had our moments as well. I still have no idea if we will be speaking when one of us dies; it's very cyclical.

6. My real name is Italian. My parents were stationed in Italy when my mom heard it. But she was afraid everyone would mispronounce it from the Italian way, and changed the spelling.

7. Hung in the same circle of friends as Mike Malinin, the drummer for the Goo-Goo Dolls, years ago when we both lived in the same dorm at the University of North Texas.

8. In 1987, I managed to get backstage after seeing The Cult, hoping to get an autograph. I sat backstage with Guns and Roses and didn't even care because I had no idea who they were.

9. Recently found out that one of my unrequited crushes in high school came out of the closet and is living in L.A. with his boyfriend. We've been e-mailing pretty regularly since we got back in touch!

10. I love languages. I've had 2 years each of French and German, learned fair amounts of Spanish and Italian, and once began learning Turkish so I could travel there. When I was little I told my mom I wanted to learn every language in the world so there would never be anybody I couldn't talk to. She said that sounded about right, since I never shut up.

58. Heres mine...
1. First and best, I met my soulmate(GF) over the internet, and we have been living together for almost 2 years now, happy as can be. We met playing Everquest.

2. I was adopted, but have never tried to find my biological parents.

3. I am Sci-FI.

4. I love japanese monster movies.

5. I was born and raised in a town or 3000 people in MN. I spent 31 years there, then moved to AZ to be with my soulmate. My hometown in MN was largely rural with lots of farming. We had lots of hayrides.

6. I love animals. We have 2 birds, Cookie and Sonny. We have 15 cats, Tigger, Cowie, Misfit, Sassy, Ziggy, Bambam, Popcorn, Graham (A bobtail) Trouble, Hershey, Littlegirl,Harley, Moushou, Red, and Butterscotch. We have 3 red eared sliders(turtles). We have 4 dogs-Peanut, Bearbear, Shera, and Millie, and 3 puppies atm.

7. I never went to a high school dance, I always skipped it in favor of the party.

8. I have been in AZ almost 2 years and still have not seen a rattlesnake, scorpion, or tarantula in the wild. I have seen a few black widows, and saw my first wild coyote in the desert 4 days ago. He was verry pretty with his winter coat.

9. I love heavy metal music. The grimmer it is, the more I like it.
Harvester of Sorrow, and Justice For All, Sanitarium, are some of my most favorite grim songs. I have seen Metallica in concert 7 or 8 times, before they went soft though. Country music disagrees with me to the point of nauseum.

10. If I won 10 million dollars in the lottery, I would make it my personal mission in life to find out the truth about bigfoot, nessie, ogopogo...etc. Maybe wait untill the girls are in college, and me and the GF would disappear into the wildernesses of the world looking for answers.

4. I have seven college credits to my name: two English classes and a weekend computer seminar.
