My lunch today (school) - just wanted to announce it
5 miserable cheese sticks (mozzarella).

This is what they feed the kids...and I'm a teacher, and they gave me Milk, Green Peas, and 5 MISERABLE cheese sticks for 3.00. School district policy.

I hate these stupid, "bottom-line" asshats in the central office of our public schools. We used to get much more in special "teacher's" lunches. Now we get these inadequate Nazi-concentration camp scraps.

And this...in the great U.S. of A...the land of the plenty.

meanwhile, how's our Trillion Dollar war going on?

5. One thing I loved about school lunches in Japan
Edited on Tue Dec-11-07 12:11 PM by Godhumor
The whole thing was balanced with nutrition information printed directly on the calendar. Every day had a form of starch (1 day bread, 2 days rice, 1 day noodles in each week), a form of protein (fish, curry, soup, etc.), 2 full sides of veggies and/or fruit.

I lost 20 pounds living there in the first 3 months simply by the massive difference in how they treat nutrition, even at the school level.

Best food I had as a teacher in the US was in Hawai'i. DC's food was almost inediable and insanely starch heavy (The first meal I bought was pizza, fries, and potato salad--yeah, the school menu sucks), and Syracuse made teachers eat exactly the same as the students. The only bonus we got was being able to cut in line.

8. that sounds about right with our policy
we get to cut in line...and get the same shit.

You know...a revolution is overdue in this country. I think Jefferson and the rest of them would have thought getting 5 miserable cheesesticks is a sign...

10. Start playing up the Appleton Project at your school
Basically, a school community switched to healthier more robust foods and a lot of problems with students have decreased.

http://www.feingold.org/PF/wisconsin1.html for an article on it (The link also includes info. on ordering their DVD and Road Map to Healthy Foods in Schools.)

You would think people would figure some of this stuff out.

14. Yep
Lots of good info out there on how *what* kids eat affects their ability to concentrate, their level of calmness, agression, etc., etc. Shame that most people don't pay attention to it, especially when schools have so much else to contend with, why add this to the list of problems they face - kids hyped up on too much sugar/starch and too little healthy fruits/veggies/protein. /sigh

6. Despite your intent, you've made me wax nostalgaic.
Edited on Tue Dec-11-07 12:05 PM by Sugar Smack
I'm remembering menus from when I was a kid:

Peanut butter & honey on bun
BBQ sandwich on bun
Baked spaghetti
Texas toast
Peas & carrots
Fishwiches
Pineapple cup
Mac & cheese
Tater tots

Sorry all around to hear the quality is so disgusting. :pals:

9. hahha...
well, even my school lunches (1989-1997) were better than this crap.

You know what...although I'd probably hate it, giving me 10 sticks instead of 5 would have probably shut me up.

How low we set our sale price, huh? :) hahahahah

13. I didn't mean crappy cheese sticks
if that's possible, but I suppose if a school can screw up a simple rectangular chunk of pizza, they can also screw up pre-made and frozen cheesesticks.

Still. I can has cheesesticks? :D

17. Our school district was out in the country....
when I was going. And all of the cafeteria ladies were country women (grandmothers) that believed in seeing to it that the kids had a good meal. We had a short order line and a full lunch line. These women were great bread makers. Rolls, chicken and dumplings, and fruit cobblers were their specialties. Outside folks would find an excuse to come to school for lunch. It was the best bargain and tasty to boot. You might hear a grumble here and there, but for the most part-we loved our cafeteria ladies. I miss them.
