I have spent all day at a Wrestling tournament
and let me tell you, that was a ton of fun. Those kids are amazing.

Especially the guy with the tampon up his nose to stop the bleeding. Fun times. Fun times.

Series. It was a lot of fun, but blood is the reason I got a doctorate and not an MD. :scared:

1. How dare you enjoy the objectification of men
Do you know how hard is it for me to walk down the street without being perceived as a strong virile man who can rip people's heads off. God damn you people

5. last time I worked at a wrestling tournament...
I sent about 8 kids to the hospital one of which had a dislocated elbow. He actually asked if I could just "snap it back in place for him"...ummmmmm no...tough kid eh?

16. Of all the prep sports I've covered
I found the kids in wrestling and cross country to be the toughest. Their mental conditioning is amazing.

I saw a kid wrestling at 160 dislocate his shoulder and want his coach to pop it back in so he could continue.

I've also seen kids in both sports break down and cry. Guess when you "tough up" that much, you've gotta have an outlet.

18. Pretty sure there was one boy with a broken wrist today.
Gah. The kid turned a really ghastly shade of grey while waiting for the coach to get his parents so he could go to the ER. I was worried about shock.

21. A funny story I overheard in the training room yesterday
a few men's basketball players were talking about their tough practice the day before and one particular drill where they some sort of sprint with a teammate on their back. One basketball player asked a wrestler if they did that sort of thing in practice and the wrestler responded in a nonchalant way "oh yeah, except we do it up hills and stuff". The basketball player was like you win! we all had a good laugh over that.

Tough cookies indeed!

22. Here, it's Park Hill
Somethin' like 420 feet at a 17 or 18 percent grade, I think. They run it every day with ankle and wrist weights.

Oh, I gotta tell this story: Before the season starts here, they have the "challenges," a big wrestle-off that's partly a season preview for the fans but mostly for the coaches to evaluate the talent head-to-head. One year, there were three girls out for wrestling, and I was taking photos as one of 'em wrestled some guy. When I looked at the negatives later, I saw that I'd gotten a shot of the guy trying to turn the girl while she had position on him, but with her back to him. His hand was clamped on her breast.

We didn't run the photo. :D

12. Our hospitality table served the coaches, refs and people
working the tournament.

There were actually four kids for each match on 'blood detail'.

19. They get to the blood really fast
State high school sports sanctioning bodies don't mess around with blood since AIDS. I've seen quite a few matches stopped for blood, then a crew would come out with towels and something in a spray bottle — PhisoHex, maybe — and give the mat a good scrubbing before the match could continue.

Fortunately, BoyMidlo wasn't wrestling today because he's JV and it's only Varsity, otherwise....:scared:
