Computer component update help need...

Out of the loop for three years...in the dark now....I know I should update my desktop computer....with medium range PC components, (including motherboard) that are being used today - I can spend literally weeks trying to research and still be undecided and in the dark....I'm not a "gamer" - don't own any games....If you know and have tried and tested, with some ideas....your suggestions will be more than welcome....Here's the medium range components in my system now that I've been using for the past three years.........

AMD Athlon XP 2800+ CPU
1024mb 333mhz DDR RAM
Geforce 5500 256mb AGP video card
Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS PCI sound card
WD Hard Drives 80gb & 60gb - 5600
Antec power supply 430 watts
XP Pro SP2

My computer runs fine now...but, I know I will need an update (soon) for my medium range/priced components that today has to offer. My son wants my computer and he does desperately need one, so I'd like to update.
