Waiting Too Long to Have Sex Linked to Sexual Dysfunction Later in Life, Study Says
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,314104,00.html

Having sex at early age has long been linked to a laundry list of health problems from an increased risk of sexual disease to an increased risk of cancer.

But now, Columbia University and New York state researchers say waiting too long to have sex may carry its own risks, according to an ABCnews.com report.

People who lose their virginity between the ages of 21 to 23 are more likely to suffer sexual dysfunction problems later in life, according to a study from Columbia University and the New York State Psychiatric Institute's HIV Center for Clinical and Behavioral Studies.

The study, which is will appear in the January 2008 issue of the American Journal of Public Health, found that men who lose their virginity in their 20's seemed more likely to have problems becoming sexually aroused and reaching orgasm.

But the researchers pointed out that men who started having sex early were also at an increased risk for sexual dysfunction and said further research is needed to determine if a causal interpretation can be made.

7. I can see this as true...
I went on one date with a guy who'd waited-the fact that I knew how old he was when he lost his virginity on the first date was probably a sign that he was weird about sex. Dude was odd.

21. thats what i think too, having sex too early or too late shows some amount of sexual dysfucntion
given cultural norms.

8. Hmm... I was a bit late getting started.
Does that explain my bizarre, indescribable and unexplainable fetishes?

I'd describe them but they're, y'know, indescribable and unexplainable.

9. I just have visions of little turkey pop-up timers installed at birth to
help remove any risk of starting too early or too late.

Mandate it and make a few billion. :silly:

10. Maybe their sexual dysfunction is why some of them waited
If they were less likely to become sexually aroused, for either physical or emotional/social reasons, they were probably less likely to have sex than their friends were in their teens. Guys that easily got aroused and were confident with their bodies were probably more likely to have sex. I think that they got the cause and affect wrong. Probably men who get easily aroused, are confident about their bodies, and confident about their decision to delay sex, aren't likely to have problems if they choose to wait. Some of such men who intended to wait, though, probably didn't because they got too aroused in an oppurtune circumstance.
If the study thinks that 21-23 is too long (I wonder what they would think about someone waiting until their late twenties or even thirties) and think that there are dangers for having sex too soon, I wonder what they think is the perfect age.

17. What would we do without studies...
"But the researchers pointed out that men who started having sex early were also at an increased risk for sexual dysfunction and said further research is needed to determine if a causal interpretation can be made."

What kind of an ass9 conclusion is that??/// Waiting too long can lead to sexual dysfunction, but starting too can result in an increased risk of sexual dysfunction? Seriously, WTF?

I demand to know if my tax dollars are paying for this horseshit research, and how I can get into the next study.

19. if 2 correlational studies prove differnt thing, they have to investigate moderating variables
before causation can even be implied.

the scientific unlike the religious/pop psychology process is very rigorous.

23. Assuming, of course, that that is even possible
Sometimes, common sense can reach same conclusions with a lot less $$$ wasted.

But research (and grants) continue on! :hi:

28. common sense lacks scientific rigor and is frequently wrong.
Edited on Sat Dec-08-07 05:21 PM by lionesspriyanka
for instance 'common sense' might think a naked pregnant woman on a magazine cover would make a bad mother, but common sense would be wrong.

common sense is frequently another name for cultural prejudices.

at one time the common sense of america believed that women were too hysterical to vote or be politicians. had they conducted a scientific study they might have realized they were talking through their ass.

29. Well...
for instance 'common sense' might think a naked pregnant woman on a magazine cover would make a bad mother, but common sense would be wrong.

And I suppose you have a rigorous scientific study to back up that claim, yes?

common sense is frequently another name for cultural prejudices.

Okay, now you're just making shit up.

at one time the common sense of america believed that women were too hysterical to vote or be politicians. had they conducted a scientific study they might have realized they were talking through their ass.

I don't think it means what you think it means.

24. I will say it might have been a mistake on my part to have waited.
My first time was (older than 23), and the night before a suicide attempt. There's an amusing slant to the story too...

26. Yeah, but how long is "too long?"
 JMO, but I think it varies from person to person, and it's difficult to set a certain age that is "too late." (Of course I could just be saying that because according to this study, I should've been getting busy several years ago and it's too late now, but, y'know.) ;) :hi: Peace.
