How about an ethics question:
There is a video tape that came out in 1994 and is no longer in print. Only used copies can be purchased, so the original creators are out of the income loop. Is it proper for me to borrow this tape from the library and copy it onto a DVD?

4. To me, no.
I can photocopy a book or periodical. I can copy a video for personal use.

5. Absolutely!
It's at the 'Free Library' right?

It's not like you're going to sell it or anything, are you?

If it's for personal use then go for it.

I used to copy movies off cable, HBO etc. all the time.

7. Then go ahead!
The ethics only comes into play when people are sharing new

original music and movies and then selling bootleg copies.

What you do, in your own home, is your business.

It's not like the FBI is going to come knocking for that!

I copied lots of movies for my kids and some for me onto VHS tapes.

I never sold them though! (Who'd buy them? lol!) :P

8. Don't know, but grey market sellers do it all the time.
There's a dude who comes to the horror film convention every year. He has a company called Cryptflix. He copies out-of-production movies from tape or 12" laser disk onto DVD and sells them. He does not get into trouble as long as he only sells out-of-production movies.

This is not a legal opnion, BTW, I'm just saying what I have seen.
