The BlueIris Semi-Nightly Poetry Break, 12/7/07
Edited on Fri Dec-07-07 09:07 PM by BlueIris
"Crazy Without Her"

The mood is tranquil. And all through the house
not a creature is stirring, not even
a mouse, because they have all been poisoned
or had a limb or neck
smashed in a trap
where they starved or bled to death.

A man buys a Christmas stocking
for his only daughter just arrived
from up north to visit him for a week.
She reminds him of his dead wife. On Christmas
morning she finds a gold ring in her stocking
and says, Thanks, Daddy. But the man has seen
a mouse run into the cold fireplace,
and he hears it and he sits on
the couch with his hands clapped to his ears,
and he is moaning. He tells his daughter:
that there are mice throughout the house, that Mother,
her mother, is never coming back,
that the next time instead of visiting
she should just call and they could have a
chat and everything would be fine.

2. Yeah, the worst thing about this? I first read it when I was 14!
It kinda warped me.

4. Seriously. That's a man who is lost.
And a daughter who is either going to think it's her fault, or else feel abandoned. :(

This poem is like a kick in the balls. Just seeing it happen to someone else makes you cringe and cross your legs.
