History being made (David Lee Roth touring with Van Halen)
Edited on Fri Dec-07-07 07:39 PM by Jim4Wes
David Lee Roth is touring with Van Halen for the first time in 22 years. Tickets go on sale for the Atlanta show tomorrow at 10:00 am. I will be doing my best to get 2 of them. Hope to see you there :)

Live Review: Van Halen in Uncasville, CT

David Lee Roth tells the story in concert like it was yesterday. As a teenager, you would often find him hanging around his best friend's suburban New Jersey home sitting among a circle of classmates, "... passing joints in both directions."

As the hazy nights would wear on, he said everyone would become focused on a wall around his buddy's dartboard where errant darts had chipped off the paint. Except, under a black light, those chips would become a field of stars, and suddenly everyone was sharing a mutual experience of deep space flight.

For me, a common teenage experience involved driving out into the country, and parking my VW Rabbit under a blanket of stars. Standing on the hood with a worn out 8-track blasting, I would play endless air guitar solos along with Eddie Van Halen < tickets >'s amazing "Eruption," and most of the rest of the band's 1978 debut project.

Last weekend, a million "Eruptions" later, the Mohegan Sun arena in eastern Connecticut became a Mecca for thousands of heavier, balder and ostensibly more mature party maniacs and air guitar champions as the latest, and possibly greatest incarnation of Van Halen hit the stage for an incomparable 26 song marathon.

From the opening licks of "You Really Got Me," through the 10-minute guitar solo that ended with a modified and rapturous "Eruption," to the echoing final power chords of "Jump," the band delivered the goods. Certainly anyone who came through the door with doubts about Van Halen's ability to "a-satisa-fy," had to depart the building with a whole new attitude about this hard rocking and hit-making act.

With Eddie's 16-year-old son Wolfgang nailing the bass and high harmonies spot-on, the band is more Van Halen than ever before. And it looks like Wolfie's youthful energy has greatly enhanced and not detracted from the formula--despite all the Michael Anthony fans who assumed the departed bassist was irreplaceable.

I was never a fan of Van Halen and such a reunion makes me ask "Why"? ;)

That's me though. If you like em, I hope you get tickets and have a good time. :hi:

6. I have only been to one rock concert before
Van Halen on the Fair Warning tour, I think it was 1980. Can't wait to see em again.

7. Michael Anthony is still a part of that band, regardless....
without him, the band is not the same....he was ( and is ) a large part of the whole Van Halen mystique...he had that energy and on-stage presence that few bassists had, more especially ones on tour.

I've heard Wolfgang is quite talented, and wouldn't mind seeing him play live...but he does have some pretty big shoes to fill

8. I guess Michael sided with Hagar in some little spat
and therefore is out. Sure he will always be part of Van Halen's mystique. On the other hand, he is not one of the creative geniuses behind the song writing as far as I know (could be wrong there).

18. I wasn't talking about Beck
I was talking about that "Sellout to the neocons to save my pathetic career" hack Dennis Miller. Though this was technically before he embraced total douchehood.

11. Bunch of folks I work with just saw this tour

They had a good time. My boss the drummer was especially impressed with the quad rolls the drummer was doing. Or something like that. I do percussion, but not on a kit.

13. See this tour if you get the chance!
I saw them Monday night in Seattle, and although they obviously have aged physically and look a bit different, it might has well been 1984 as far as the sound. I wished Michael Anthony could have been there, but apparently his head is buried in the ass of a certain Republican tequila salesman who shall not be named. Michael's backing harmonies were better than his bass playing anyway, and who better to hit the high notes than a 16 year old kid. Wolfie still looks a little nervous on stage, but he sounds fine. Blows my mind to think that he wasn't even born the last time I saw this band though.

21. Yeah, he didn't do any splits off the drum risers the other night.
But he got a few kicks in. I'd say for a 53 year old, he's in remarkable shape.
