What alcohol makes up a typical bar for a party? Also, mixers, I suppose would be important.

I've never been asked to provide the drinks for a party before, and I would appreciate some advice.

1. What kind of party? Type of guests?
Wine drinkers? Booze drinkers? Holiday party? Football party?

These things matter.

5. Artists... Film people, painters, also financial people, investors, etc...

A very diversified crowd. A few actresses will be there. A policeman will be there! Movie producer. Film people.

2. Well, there are a few....vodka is a big one ( Stoli is my choice )
Edited on Fri Dec-07-07 07:32 PM by TK421
but you may want to throw in some Jack Daniels, gin ( Beefeaters is a good brand, less expensive than Bombay or Tanqueray ) but still quite good.

Throw in some cheap scotch ( mostly for mixers, but some people like it straight up, get a bottle of Dewars ) I could recommend several others, but I'm not quite sure what kind of party you're looking to throw.

edited to add: I was slow to think on this one, but as far as wine goes, check out a good Cab or Merlot, and get a bottle of Chenin Blanc or Chardonnay for your wine drinkers ( a good, affordable Merlot is Blackstone, which is anywhere between 12-14$ a bottle, or St.Francis Knights Valley Cabernet, which, on the other side runs about $30. Depends on your crowd, but I'm just throwing shit out there.

If you need more info, please let me know! I love making recommendations!

3. Three six-packs of beer, three bottles of wine, two bottles of soda
and a bottle of rum, and two bottles of juice and a bottle of vodka.

Per person. :)

4. Well, from my personal experience...
if someone there hasn't eaten for 12+ hours, don't let them drink tequila AND rum. Especially if there isn't much in the way of food at this party.

7. Lol, I appreciate your post
The only time I ever got sick at a party was when a "friend" of mine gave me a rum and coke. Too much rum, I guess. I puked... it was awful.

8. Pretty much the same thing that happened to me.
Only add in a few shots of tequila too. And a LOT of rum and a teeny weeny bit of coke, just for added color and flavor. :) One of those big 7-11 cup sized plastic cups, at least 3/4 full of rum. Then another one that was about 1/2 and 1/2. Then the tequila shots. All on an empty stomach.

Needless to say that is the only time I ever threw up from drinking, and the only real hangover I've ever had. Also the closest to actually getting drunk that I'd ever been. There was one other time when I kinda had a half-hangover, but only because somebody woke me up too early. Once I got back to sleep for a couple hours I was fine. :)

15. Don't even know who that is. :P
It was when the last of my group of college friends turned 21. So now that everybody could drink, we threw a big (for us at least. We were geeks, we didn't do big parties.) party with lots of booze. Actual booze. Not just some college crappy keg party.

17. Question about Tequila
I've always heard that is the worst drink so far as hangovers and headaches.

Is that true?

Is tequila pretty rough? Is that the drink that has a worm at the bottom of the bottle?

16. That could have been part of the problem...
I didn't mix the two together though. At least, not until they hit my stomach. :)

6. 60 beers.
And 4 hard ciders (Woodchuck is a good brand) for the inevitable stick-in-the-mud who contends that "I don't like beer".

9. This is all helpful
I'm just trying to assemble a very basic "bar" for a party.

I will get:

Beer
White wine
Red wine
Vodka
Whiskey
Gin

Is that okay? What am I forgetting?

Is rum important?
Is tequila important?

What am I forgetting?

20. I don't want to impress anyone, I just want to have the basics for a party.
Edited on Fri Dec-07-07 08:12 PM by Mike03
I'm not the most social person. So I really don't know what is a good assortment to have.

But many of the suggestions here are very helpful.

I think so far:

Water
Tonic Water
Beer
Wine Red and White
Vodkah
Gin
Whiskey/Bourban (are they the same thing?)

I'll go light on the hard liquors, and have more soft drinks, water, beer and wines.

What am I forgetting?

EDIT

Cognac was what I was trying to think of. Is Cognac important?

Rum?
What is that thicker sweet drink that they drank on the Titanic?
I know there's something I'm forgetting, but I don't know...

23. I'd add lemon and lime slices
The lime is key for a good gin and tonic. Lemon goes well with some beers. Maybe some grenadine..?
