Okay, then.

My favorite female rock musicians are:

older
younger
talented guitar players
talented keyboard players
talented singers

I'm not particularly aware of bass players or drummers.

20. *whew*
at least I didn't get spanked for that answer.

In no particular order:

Joan Jett
Chrissie Hynde
Ann Wilson
Nancy Wilson
Janis Joplin (I should've included dead, in my prior response.)
Lucinda Williams
Annie Lennox
The Bangles (I don't know them by their individeual names  )
Deborah Harry
Bonnie Raitt
Pat Benatar

I'm not sure how much they qualify as "rock":
Joni Mitchell (she is in the rock-n-roll HoF)
Dar Williams
Lydia Pense
Etta James
Annie Haslam
Emmylou Harris
k d lang
Tori Amos

:D

29. Fruit, Waifs, Laura Love,
Fruit - great band from down under. Three female lead singer/songwriters/instrumentalists. I've seen them a bunch of times live when they've toured the US. Here's an excellent quality clip from "Good Morning Australia" :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zXLunb2yNgI

Waifs - another Aussie group. I've seen them a bunch of times on tour as well. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ADlAc-NsDng&feature=related
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_emz0o638PQ&feature=related

Laura Love - simply amazing singer and bass player. Great to see live. http://flink.livedownloads.com/show.asp?show=765. Audio preview clips on the side.

Always laughing - unless she's on a political rant. She was calling for impeachment at a concert I saw 3 or 4 years ago I think.

She was probably with Jen Todd - member of her full band that she tours with. Love that Afro-Celtic folk-funk music!

37. hard to fix some in a genre...
I like Neko Case, but like her solo stuff more than the NewPorn. I listened to her so much that I had to take a break. She's a great live performance.

I really like Jolie Holland - Escondito and Springtime Can Kill You.

Mad Tom of Bedlam - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Og-D0J2a1g
Crush In the Ghetto- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V9Tz7IpyN0k

-she's certainly not the over-produced idea of any genre. She's sort of - a musical artist? I've been listening to her too much lately.

I like Cat Power, Susan Tedeschi, Big Momma Thornton, Etta James, Janis Jopln, Sometimes the Deal sisters, mostly Pacer when they were the Amps, or The Breeders. Lucinda Williams doesn't seem the "country" to me. Bjork sometimes, also Aimee Mann. (they're just sooooo much alike!) Someone just gave me great Mavis Stamples cd- We'll Never Turn Back.

But the female singer I REALLLLLLY like to listen to is Anita O'Day. If you watch some of her old performances on YouTube - her voice amazes me - her inflections and the way she can turn notes and keep going farther with it...

sorry, just got me going on this one.
