4. 1999 Quintessa

$125 per bottle. Disappointing. Very alcohol forward and tight.

2001 Conundrum last night at $22 per bottle. Very disappointing. I think my disappointment stemmed from the preconceived notions I had of this wine as a result of the omnipresent hype. I was expecting an orgasm in a bottle and instead just had a nice wine.

That I paid for, Cristal, $300, not worth it.

That I didn't pay for? an early 60's Chateau Y'Quem. it was old. it was probably a little too old. it was made when Abraham Lincoln was president. it was bought at auction for about 18,000 bucks.

Murphy-Goode Snake Eyes Zinfandel. Category #2.

Thought it would be even better than their Liar's Dice Zinfandel (Category #1). It was--but that was a special occasion.

if so, it was the bottle of louis tre' that I won when I was waitin' tables. I think it was around $700/bottle...maybe more.
it was $50/shot on the menu(but I could sell after-dinner drinks off the cart like no one else).
I gave the crystal decanter to a girlfriend who thought it was 'pretty'.

9. The one from my failed wine business

Opened it up to sample it, an hour later got sick and spent the next two days in the bathroom.

Secondary fermentation had spoiled the entire batch. $20,000 down the drain.

don't know what it's worth, but it's a lovely wine . . . have about a half dozen more bottles, along with a half dozen 1961 Chateau Latour . . . jealous? . . . :)

I'm only 19 so I do not drink alcohol. I did have some when my class took a trip to Germany, but it was just one glass.

Because I didn't pay for it. I'm sure it was at a party. The host had a VERY impressive wine cellar. He served two white wines w/ appetizers, 2 reds w/ dinner and 2 champagnes w/ dessert. He had us score the wines against each other.

It was a fun party.

16. Several in the $100-$200 range.

All were worth it. Not a one was corked (lucky me).


Had some miserable failures in the $50-$100 range, though. Some corked; some overpriced, overoaked crap Chards; some decent $20 wines that weren't worth the hype.

Actually, I tend to do better (more consistently) in the $20-$50 range than $50-$100. I suppose it doesn't seem so bad when the juice doesn't live up to expectations.

And there are several damn nice bottles in the under-$10 range (made with real grapes!) that could have sold for twice the money.



All in all, the love of wine is a lifelong oddysey of discovery, disappointment, and delight. Bottoms up!
