4. *dong* "Oh, stewardess..."
Me: <very calmly and quietly> "Not ruin your day or anything, but take a gander through yon window, if you please." <points discreetly at window>

Flight Attendent: <glances out window> Urk.

Me: My feelings exactly. Perhaps a trip to the front of the plane is in order?

Flight Attendent: Um. Yeah! <flees up the aisle>

Me: Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue...

7. I'd be a bit surprised, since I'm only on the second story here.
I don't think planes usually fly that low. But I suppose if they're having engine troubles that might explain it.

9. I had a similar experience.
Many years ago I was on a Southern Airways DC-3, sitting by the left engine.
Flying from Kansas City to Birmingham.

During the take off roll I noticed some small streaks of oil coming from the engine cowling. Not all that unusual on an airplane that old. Maybe some spillage from the top off.

As we climbed to altitude the flow became heavier. This was definitely not spillage.
Just as I called the cabin attendant over to show her what was going on, the engine propeller was feathered and it was shut down.

We diverted to Huntsville and safely landed on one engine.
4 of us rented a car and proceeded to Birmingham.

10. Damn, I hate it when that happens,
but it's kind of cool to be able to see what's inside. Looks like this one has a FADEC (Full Authority Digital Engine Control). It's only really bad when the blades come flying out.

14. I imagine it would scare the crap
Edited on Wed Dec-05-07 09:52 AM by GTRMAN
...out of a lot of people. It is really not as bad as it looks. It looks like someone probably didn't fasten the cowilng and it blew off. It's not a big load bearing structural part, so the chances of it bringing the plane down are pretty low.

Stil, scary as hell to look at :scared:

19. That just means...
they are trying extra hard to keep the engine cool because they are keeping a higher power setting than normal in the attempt to get you to your connecting flight on time.

Thats all...

21. Looks like the cowling just separated.
As long as the pieces coming off didn't do any damage further aft, no big deal.

23. About as bad as the time I was coming back from CA
and had a real funny pilot. He made the announcement 'ladies and gentlemen, if you look off to your left and see pieces falling off of engine number 4, please don't be alarmed. It isn't working anyway. We'll be returning to San Francisco'

He wasn't kidding.
