Men See Beer As Depression Buster
<snip>

ONE in four men think the best way to help a depressed friend is to take them to the pub for a beer, a survey has found.

And 25 per cent of people believe most young people with depression or anxiety will simply grow out of it, while one-third think severe moodiness and irritability are a normal part of youth.

The depression survey of 1200 people, carried out by the Mental Health Council of Australia (MHCA) and published in the Pfizer Australia Health Report, showed some serious misconceptions about mental health.

One quarter of the men surveyed believed the best thing they could do was share a beer with their depressed friend to help them forget their worries.

5. I had a shrink tell me that I was depressed cause I drink beer.
When I explained that I had been drinking beer for 30 f$&king years with no depression and the fact was that my wife was, at the time, dying was the reason I was depressed, she did not reply.... I then asked her if she had ever had a beer. She said No.... I then began to realized that I was being "treated" by an absolute moron.... Follow up: Standford cured my wife's cancer I'm not depressed, life is good & I have plenty of cold beer in the reefer!

7. What is it about being depressed
that makes drinking more attractive to us?

The answer's pretty clear to me...When we're depressed, we want to wallow in it a bit. Drinking doesn't make us forget our troubles; it gives us an excuse for being over-emotional, particularly for men who are trapped in their traditional tough-guy roles.

I don't see any problem with that unless it becomes a habit.
