What Is Your Favorite 'All In The Family ' Episode
TV Land showed twice this weekend.

The one where 'Meathead's' friend David Brewster comes by on Christmas, and he is living
up in Canada, avoiding the Vietnam War, Archie grills him, and his friend sits next to him
who has lost a son in Vietnam, but he forgives and wants David to stay, while Archie has a
hard time with it............:hi:

1. Shoe Booty
That episode explains where Archie's bigoted views of the world came from and why it was so difficult for him to change.

2. I liked the character of Gloria much more after she & Mike broke up.
They shoulda never canceled her spin off--apparently Carol O'Connor insisted they do so when his ratings went down (altho the "Gloria" ratings were perfectly acceptable for a 1st season show.)

4. Interesting; Carroll's influence started in AitF's 4th season...

3. "Gloria's Shock"
Ironic as the series started to go really sour in season 4; and yet the aforementioned classic from season 5 says so much that hasn't dated at all either.

5. Is that the one where Mike did "The Shocker" on Gloria and the house exploded?
I thought they pulled that one from syndication.

8. 'Judging Books by Covers'
Season 1, episode 5.

Archie thought Mike's friend Roger was gay and lashed out with the typical anti-gay stuff. ("No, a guy who wears glasses is a four-eyes. A guy who's a fruit is a fag.")

Mike then learned that Archie's friend Steve, an ex-football player, is gay, and told Archie — who wasn't quite so disbelieving as to not mention to Steve what Mike said. He brought it up while they were arm wrestling at Kelsey's. Steve looked Archie square in the eye and said, "He's right, Arch," then pinned him.

I'll never forget the look on Archie's face. It said his paradigm had just shifted a bit. :)

9. And real life proved loyalty was nothing compared to money, fortunately.
Lucille Ball wanted CBS to ax the show because of that one episode.

And, at the time, she had considerable clout in the industry.

Usually, homage to loyalty isn't a bad thing. But AitF was an exception that transcended stereotypes. The fact it was immensely popular saved it. And I will say this; unlike later episodes, "Judging Books By Covers" is mature and evenhanded in its approach.

10. I've read that Lucy wasn't fond of the show
for its brazenness in going after social constructs. She thought comedy should stick more or less to a Vaudvillian style and was also a pretty conservative mother.

But, ax it? You got a source on that? I'd like to read more.

The source was an episode of the "E! True Hollywood Story"; the link is the best I can do for now.
