"They'd probably be better off in prison"

I sent a care package off to a soldier in Iraq--thanks to SoCalDem for providing me with a name--& had an interesting conversation with the couple who own the place where I took it to be packed up. The husband said, "They can't do any good there. They should never have gone." I replied that I agreed, but that they had signed up for the duty & had a choice of going to Iraq or going to prison. His wife said, "They'd probably be better off in prison". I really didn't know how to reply to that, so I said nothing. They made up the package for me free of charge.
