What was up with the 80s setting with all the modern anachronistic things in it, anyway?

4. If you ever lived in Idaho, you'd understand
Most places here are about ten to twenty years behind the times. No one seems to find this strange.

I thought that movie captured the zeitgeist perfectly.

18. I had no clue what the hell I had seen after watching it the first time
Edited on Sun Dec-02-07 11:58 PM by fujiyama
I loved it the second time, and when I saw part of it today, I realized why I liked it. The people looked the most real of any teen film or show I had seen. They didn't all look like models (like all the other TV shows). Plus, I liked the quirky innocence. I don't see that very often in films.

Granted, I never saw Freaks and Geeks, but heard great things about that...

20. I had to watch it a few times before I thought it was funny.
Now I think it's brilliant. There's just something about the earnestness of them all that's simultaneously appealing and ridiculous. It's got a certain absurdist quality to it, too: for instance, "I caught you this delicious bass."

23. I agree
I didn't see the big deal about that one. I feel like it was one of those movies that received rave reviews more for being something quirky and different than for actually being all that spectacular. There are some funny parts, but they're actually more funny quoted out of context than in the context of actually sitting through the two hour movie. I agree with the critic who said the movie was more like a string of sometimes funny, mostly not-that-great comedy skits strung together to make up a full-length movie. FWIW, I did sit through it a second time. It made a little more sense, but it wasn't any funnier.

Oh yeah, and the "stuck in the past" thing kind of weirded me out, too. I think the movie was supposed to be set in the present, but where Napoleon lives is just supposed to be very backwards. I'm from a fairly backward part of the country (East Texas), but it's doubtful any place in the US is even anywhere near that far out of time. I mean, it's rural America, not a third world country, right? Having never been to Idaho myself, though, who knows? (And yeah, I know it's just a movie, but I just thought that aspect was too unrealistic to be believed.)

Anyway, that's just my take. I know I'm in the minority on this one.

25. I've lived in Idaho AND East Texas
And yes, many parts of Idaho ARE that backward. They make any place in East Texas look like Fritz Lang's Metropolis.
