I'm going in for surgery tommorow
Just a routine, same day surgery that shouldn't cause any problems... a follow up on the 'Mallory Weiss Tear' that put me in the hospital on Christmas day.

Problem is, I'm scared.

And I'm not sure why.

Oh, and Happy Birthday to me. I'm 41 today.

7. All the best to you!
I think it's normal to be frightened before surgery, even if it's routine. Please give us an update when you're back in action.

And happy birthday to you! :hi:

8. Happy B-day!
Easy for me to say "don't worry" but really, don't worry. It's natural and normal to be concerned. You're in good hands. Is it general anesthetic? If so, good on ya. Great stuff and it'll be over before you know it. YOU WILL BE FINE!!!! There, now have a great B-day!

20. Well, surgery is scary
I keep thinking of the skin as a giant "keep out" sign for the body. Surgery completely ignores that and allows trespassing.

I've had three surgeries. I think the hardest part is the loss of control over my life during those hours. It's a good spiritual discipline to have to surrender to someone else for a while, but it sure is difficult.

I don't know if you're religious. If not, just ignore this next part.

When a member of my former congregation was going in for surgery to fix a tumor behind her ear, she'd been so busy being tough for everyone in her family that she hadn't allowed herself to feel some of the normal fear. She's the kind of person who always has perfect control over every situation. The Sunday before her surgery, she was in the church office, crying at the desk. We talked a bit, and I said, "Y'know, this would be a good time to give all this control to God and just put yourself in God's hands (and the doctors')." She said, "Right. God is my co-pilot." I said, "Think again. This time, God gets to be the pilot." She laughed and nodded and had a different way to frame it.

If you're religious, this is a good time to let God be the pilot.
