Any 10,000 Maniacs fans here?
Edited on Tue Feb-03-04 10:36 PM by mvd
Just wanted to get this in before I get off - I've never been wild about Natalie Merchant's solo work, but I heard the new Campfire Songs: The Popular, Obscure & Unknown Recordings album on Netscape's full album listening party, and was hooked! Bought it today and am a big fan! They were one of the more innovative groups of the 80s. Wanted to let others know about the new compilation album.

1. funny... I was listening to 'The Wishing Chair' just today

I've been a fan of the Maniacs since '85. I kind of parted ways with them when they lost Natalie Merchant, though. :-(

And I agree with you... Natalie's solo work isn't as good as their early stuff.

2. So is this a solo effort for Natalie or is it a compilation of old...
..."never released" Maniacs tracks?
I like Natalie's voice but her last album was a HUGE disappointment.

From beginning to end.

20. Yes
There are a few songs on the second CD listed as "previously unissued." I have a crush on Natalie, too.

12. hmmm... I'm afraid I strongly disagree
I think Natalie Merchant and the other original members of the group showed remarkable talent. Their early albums were really beautiful, IMO.

9. 10,000 Maniacs fan here and,
a solo Natalie Merchant fan. Her new stuff is great. She has the right voice for the songs she's performing now, very haunting.

If you are able, find their cover of "To Sir With Love"
i guarantee you'll love it!

10. Saw them open for REM in 1987,
after releasing "In My Tribe" and "Document" respectively. One of the best shows I ever saw, despite flighty Natalie's refusal (shyness?) to address the audience or even look at them. Literally spent the entire show looking stage left or stage right. Great times.

14. I remember that Peter Buck came out
whirling like a dervish, playing the intro to "Begin the Begin." And Bill Berry played the entire drum part of "Superman" with a cigarette in his mouth. These little puffs of smoke would occasionally escape, like he was sending a message to the Okawi tribe or something. The next time I saw them, they'd graduated to stadiums (Green tour). That theater show is my favorite, though.

on MTV is a favorite music memory from my teens years. they did 'to sir with love'. we'd just gotten rid of Bush the elder, music was experiencing a renaissance with the alternative rock boom of the early 90s. things were looking great

of course, clinton started triangulating, the GOP took congress, the rise of newt began and the shroud of the dark side fell. a few years later, we had the spice girls and britney

oh well. it was nice while it lasted

(on a strange footnote, that wonderful celebration with REM, U2, the maniacs, soul asylum, gore, chelsea and the rest was hosted by a popular liberal comic at the time named Dennis Miller. He was later abducted by aliens and implanted with hairplugs that turned him into the evil Bizarro Dennis of today)

11. Me too.
Love Natalie and 10,000 Maniacs. "In My Tribe" didn't leave my deck for several months after it was released. "Our Time In Eden" is one of my desert island discs. And Natalie's voice reminds me of every girl I ever had a crush on in high school.

18. Well said Mac
:hi:

"In My Tribe" would probably be one of my DI discs. It didn't leave my car's CD player for months when I was in college. I've had the pleasure of seeing them live many times too and Natalie really has a way of connecting with the crowd. I like most of her solo stuff as well. Their "unplugged" album is really great too. It's nice hearing their old classics stuff done a little differently.

19. Good to see you again, SiouxJ!
Haven't seen you in a while. How is everything? I've been good - I'm going on vacation to South Carolina soon.

The second disc has songs such as their version of "Peace Train" - the lesser known recordings. It's good that these weren't ignored.

21. Hey Matt!
Ah yes, but I have the original version of "In My Tribe" which actually has their version of "Peace Train" on it :-) . They took it off for like the second "pressing" after all that confusion over Cat supporting terrorism or whatever it was. In any case, I'll still have to check out that disc for sure!

I'm pretty good. Glad you are well and it's nice seeing you around again too. Have fun in SC. I was just in NC last fall to do a little leaf peeking.

22. I might want to buy In My Tribe now..
even though I have some of the highlights from it on the compilation.

I want to get to South Carolina while it's still winter here. ;-) Thanks for the wish for a fun trip, and take care. :hi:
