In Aisle 10 of Wal*mart in the middle of the night....
I was at Wal*mart last night, around midnight, to get boxes from the stockers for my impending move.

This is sort of a long rant, and the real (to me, anyway) shocking information is at the bottom. If you're not interested in my story, skip down to the puking smilies.

I had a long talk with a nice lady stocker. Won't say much about her in case the Wal*mart drones read this. I will say, and I say this with no sense of superiority whatsoever, that it was obvious from talking to her that she's not very educated and has little sense of personal empowerment. That's not to say she wasn't intelligent -- in fact, her vocabulary was so good for someone who dropped out of school in the tenth grade that I asked her if she read a lot, and she said she does -- but I offer that information in case some may find it relevant.

What's definitely relevant is this -- she said she makes $8.90 per hour, and was very proud of that, because most people who've only been there a year make just $6.70 an hour, but she got a better deal for herself because she agreed to be on a team that takes responsibility for preventing accidents in the store.

We talked at length about what it's like for her, working at Wal*mart. She told me several horror stories of women being passed over for promotions in favor of much less-qualified men. Also, she was once suspended without pay for a week because she worked 49 hours. They paid her time-and-a-half for the 9 hours, but they were furious with her. (It was during the flu epidemic, and she worked over to make sure that all her responsibilities were met. It took longer because she was essentially doing the work of two people for almost every shift that week.) She received a disciplinary write-up and was suspended for a week.

I asked her if she liked the job. She said she liked what she actually does -- it makes her feel good to make the shelves look good. The aisles she's responsible for have a lot of kid-friendly items, and she said that it's a nice feeling to know that some little kid will be happy and able to find exactly the (item) he or she wants because she did a good job.

I asked her about other job prospects after hearing her story about the LWOP suspension. She said that she had some training in electronics, and was offered a job for $10.15 an hour at a local establishment (can't say more; too revealing). She turned it down, however, because all the signs point to that industry dying in our area, and she and her husband agreed that, within six months to a year, it would probably be shipped overseas. Wal*mart, she pointed out with a sigh, will still be here. And maybe in six months to a year she could be up to $9 an hour!

My heart was breaking at this point for her. I mean, I have it pretty bad myself, but I'm blessed with a good education and some writing ability. I recently sold an essay that I worked on for eight hours for more money than she'll make in two weeks of breaking her back all night. She has a *regular* income, and I don't, but I don't put up with much indignity, and that's a major part of her life, too.

Anyway, I digress.

:puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke:

Wal*mart makes me want to puke in a new way. It turns out that when someone slips and falls in Wal*mart, the money for the lawsuit comes out of the employees' pockets in a MUCH more direct way than you or I could ever have imagined. Instead of it cutting profits or causing them to take more safety measures, this is how it works:

Each store has a "risk management" team. It's their job to constantly be all over the store making sure that there's no way someone can slip and get hurt. ANYTIME someone does, you can bet they sue. Wal*mart settles over 90% of these out-of-court. Where does the money come from?

The "Risk Management" team gets a yearly "Christmas" bonus (and it ain't much even in a perfect year of no lawsuits at their store). If there is a lawsuit, the money comes out of the RM team's "Christmas" bonuses!! She said, "That's how come they get so mad at you if you work overtime. They think since you'll get a bonus in December if there ain't no accidents, you should just clock out and go do your Risk Management anyway, 'cause you'll get paid for it later."

Wal*mart just put KB Toys out of business. Who'll be next? How long until we ALL work for Wal*mart???

:scared: :scared: :scared:

Thanks for listening, y'all.

2. Very interesting read...
I've always felt sorry for Wal Mart workers. I know most of them have taken the job as a last resort. I saw a media whore on television today commenting about how everyone is ganging up on Wal Mart and how that is to be expected when your company is growing the way Wal Mart is. It made me want to puke!

3. I read just about everything you post, SGW.
I'm not surprised that your being at Wal*Mart, and especially talking to the woman employee, has had such a profound impact on you. May you find a way to turn your experiences into action -- but first things first. Let's get you over your current crisis.

I confess I am tempted to shop at Wal*Mart whenever I need something rather expensive and know I can save a bundle on it there. (And after dreaming on Sunday that someone was trying to kill me, I considered going there to buy a shotgun for the closet. I can't stomach the thought of walking into an actual gun shop.) But I patently refuse to shop there.

17. Go to K-Mart.
Look under GUNS in the yellow pages if you don't have a K-Mart in your area. They're not all sold a gun shops.

You will do better at a gun shop because they know their stuff and can make sure that yopu get the right one for your needs. I've never been "sold up" at a gun shop. They've never even tried.

Theu can also arrange for any training you might need or at least set you up with a list of qualified firearms trainers.

4. I boycott Walmart
And I live in NW Arkansas. The stores have a negative feel around here. Did you know that if you work for a WalMart and quit, you can't work for WalMart again? I've heard that is true from a person who moved, but first had to apply and get an approved transfer.

Around where I live, the average pay rate is $7 an hour. I make $7.50 (and NOT at WalMart). So the wages WalMart pays is average or above-for Arkansas.

7. Stupid question, if you don't mind my asking:
Is $7.50 a living wage, ayeshahaqqiqa? How on earth do you make it?

10. Thanks SGW, for the post
Have you read the book "Nickled and Dimed " ? it details working at WM.

Regarding the bonus: There is a Wal-Mart down the road, one of the smaller ones. They had a manager in there who was real good with the employees. He used to share his Xmas bonus with the staff, I guess the managers get a big bonus if they keep employee hours down, etc. Well he would do that by splitting up his bonus amongst his crew, which made them happy and they worked harder for him. When corporate management found out, they transferred him to one of the new "supercenter" WM's where there are too many employees to do that. Then they brought in this hatchet lady from arkansas and all the employees in the old store make less, hate her and hate their jobs now.

Wal-Mart sucks. Made in China

11. Yes, it's a fabulous book.
I am constantly in the secondhand stores prowling for paperback copies. I buy them for $1 and them give them away. It's helped a LOT of people change their thinking.

13. I closed my store
after Walmart moved in. It just wasn't fun anymore coming to work when They were selling stuff cheaper than I could by it wholesale. But that is the way it works. The community made the choice to shop there and thats America.

14. How the FUCK did they get away with suspending her for 40 hours?
That does NOT sound legal to me. And why the hell is she the one to get disciplined? Does her supervisor not know what her schedule is?

I'd be curious to know if she votes repuke or dem.

Oh Mother of God.. this pissed me off

15. Oh, you better believe I asked how she votes
She paled three shades and then proceeded to tell me that she, her husband, all their siblings, their parents, and all their grown children were all yellow-dog Democrats. In fact, referring to her son, she said that just last October, she had "dragged his scraggly ass out of bed at 7:30 on his 18th birthday and told him we was goin' ta register him to vote! And if he didn't like it, there'd be no cake and no birthday money!"

I told her I loved her. And I do. :-D She rocks!!!
