Poll question: JJ's boob or Mike Ditka's erection problems?
If you watched the superbowl, you were exposed to both. Which is more offensive or more embarrassing to explain to a 10 year old?

2. I liked the image

I thought the image of throwing a football through a tire was quite symbolic ;-)

3. I don't know.......

at least 'those' commercials attempt to convey what the drugs are all about using metaphor and allegory as opposed to a breast flapping all over the place.

One would hope the meaning would go over the heads of most kids, but it's hard to camouflage or explain away Janet's unexpected friend.

4. well I didn't even SEE the booby
when it happened. My boyfriend spotted it and told me about it. Then, of course, I saw it replayed a thousand times.

But I can imagine a kid asking after a 60 second commercial "Mommy, what's erectile dysfunction?"

5. Understand, but my guess would be that kids are going to be....
a lot more attentive to the halftime show than the commercials....Janet has much more attractiveness to kids than does Mike Ditka.

6. You could say,
"Well, sweety, it's what happens to men when they drink all that beer being advertised, even though they get to see Ms. Jackson's bare breast. That's why they need special medicine. Sometimes that's what happens to really angry men like Mr. Ditka. They stay so angry all the time that bad things happen to their blood vessels and they get heart attacks and then they get erectile dysfunction."

or

"Go ask your dad."

12. No, it doesn't happen that way.
At least not in my house, and I've got a kid that age.

What happens is this -- any time a drug commercial comes on, for any ailment whatsoever, the kid's brain activates the "I do not care about this whatsoever" filter and nothing gets through.

My kid has seen about a billion drug commercials and he's never once asked about the drug or the ailment it purports to ameloriate.

But any commercial for a hot new video game or must-see kids' movie is memorized in excruciating detail, even if seen only once.

13. heheh...
I dunno.

I remember asking my mother "What's a douche?" the first time I ever saw a massengil commercial when I was young. To this day, she hasn't answered ;)

8. Another difference was that I wasn't directly exposed to Mike.....
Ditka's erection problems (thank God), I was however directly exposed to Janet's breast (or most of it).

11. of course I did...
no need to shrug. We're each explaining our points of view.

Mine is that a one-second shot of a semi-covered breast from a second is a silly thing to get worked up about.

The fury seems to be that it was inappropriate for children. I maintain that it's no more inappropriate than repeated commercials discussing erectile dysfunction, or for that matter, farting horses and crotch-biting dogs.

To be clear, I don't want ANY of them banned - I just find it funny that of all the things a kid was exposed to if he saw the superbowl, the ONLY thing people are worked up about is the boob.

15. I only shrug when I'm happy........
I understand your point of view, and for the most part I share it.

I just think that whatever line is considered 'the norm' in this country seemed to have been crossed when the boobie made it's appearance...I don't completely understand where that line is, considering you can see much worse on NYPD Blue, but there it is.

I also feel that it would have been easier to avoid Mike's 'problem' than it would have been to avoid Janet's boobie....a child would have had to probe a bit to figure out what the commercials were getting at, whereas Janet's business was out there for anyone to see.

14. The superbowl ads have for ages shown ads that show
violence against women, normal men being belching idiots, and this year we had the guy with the red lacy pants on and either the same guy or another with pierced nipples trying to do an erotic dance. I'm suprised many people even noticed it the first time around.
