23. I know!
Just reading it kills me.

And Engelbert Humperdinck! Yes, he was the man. That's not his real name; he's from Britain, but that's not his name. There's very few Humperdincks in Britain. He was born Gerry Dorsey, not Engelbert Humperdinck. His parents were not Mr. and Mrs. Humperdinck. They never said, "What shall we call our son so he does not get the shit kicked out of him at school?"

"We shall call him Engelbert!"

"Good, that'll work!"

No, his name was Gerry Dorsey, and he released songs as Gerry Dorsey, songs such as
(mumbles) which didn't work 'cause nobody could hear what he was saying. And then his managers, obviously, said, "We're going to change your name, Gerry! It's the name that's the problem." And his name changed from Gerry Dorsey to Engelbert Humperdinck. I mean, I just wanted to be in the room when they were working that one through.

"Zingelbert Bembledack! Yingybert Dambleban! Zangelbert Bingledack! Wingelbert Humptyback! Slut Bunwalla!"

"What?!"

"All right, Kringelbert Fishtybuns! Steviebuns Bottrittrundle..."

"No, Gerry Dorsey, I like Gerry Dorsey!"

"No, we can't do it. Who we got? Zingelbert Bembledack, Tringelbert Wangledack, Slut Bunwalla, Klingybun Fistelvase, Dindlebert Zindledack, Gerry Dorsey, Engelbert Humptyback, Zengelbert Bingledack, Engelbert Humperdinck, Vingelbert Wingledanck…"

"No, no, go back one. Go back one. 'Engelbert Humperdinck.' That's it!"

Well, maybe the one time I saw Paula Poundstone.

Silverman's standup is too snarky for me - but her musical spoofs are funny.

37. Literally. I have seen a couple episodes and she seems to try to imitate a character similar to
Archie Bunker.

Except she lacks the gravitas and tact Carroll O'Connor had. That's why he could make Archie funny, but she can't make herself funny. Just being politically incorrect is not enough.

32. LL. Silverman's CAN BE pretty good
And Silverman does have delivery, agreed. That bit on "The Aristocrats," where she just starts going off on how she was molested? Priceless.

I don't think of SS as homophobic, racist, sexist, or bigoted in any way. I think what confuses people is that she's a "straight man" without a sidekick. (Originally "straight man" wasn't in quotes, but then it occurred to me that the phrase "straight man" might have a different meaning these days) SS is "Blazing Saddles."

Lisa Lampanelli just isn't very funny. LL is just not funny, bigoted bits aside. I know her delivery COULD be there: did you see the recent episode of Reno 911 in which she played the Unitarian minister? She has potential, just not as a stand-up.

83. really?
I've only seen her a few times. Like, once she was on a talk show and said something to the nature of 'every 15 seconds is how often an African American jumps up and down behind a newscaster who is broadcasting live'. Ha ha ha. That first joke was pretty much all I need to hear to know that she had nothing to offer me. I'm not interested in the pov that says that people who 'think' those jokes are racist (or sexist, homophobic, whatever) are just 'too sensitive' or 'over-reacting', or 'don't get it'. People have every right to remain assholes, and have their own asshole comedienne's to entertain them. I just wish they had the balls to embrace their own prejudice instead of denying it and pretending like people who call it what it is 'don't get it'.

34. Yeah, cancer. So you don't like her, so what? Lots of us...
find her fascinating.

She's not usually yukyuk funny, but sets up secenarios that some of us appreciate. Her show is one of those where she's exploring the truly clueless, and there's no point in exploring cluelessness if you're not gonna get really wierd. To paraphrase Larry David-- if you don't know a Sarah Silverman, you probably ARE a Sarah Silverman.

I like Lisa Lampanelli and Mencia, too, and even laugh at Larry the Cable Guy once in a while. I'll go with Dennis Miller as a wasting my air, but tend not to trash most comics, even the ones I don't laugh at.

Those of you who are so ready to slam these comics-- just who DO you think is funny? Who would you pay to see?

But you have to accept the premise that utter self-absorption can be funny at all. If you're not into that, no, the show won't be much fun. The rest of the cast, however, are terrific.

100. only to idiots, morons, mental neanderthals, prima dons & donnas, and
truly insulting, self-satisfied, close-minded jerks.

Please elucidate and educate. Which category applies to you? Or was that too tough a question? Could it be more than one?

In my few years here, I have never told anyone to go cheney-ise themselves. Nor, to my present recollection, have I received that lame, tired, over-used GOP cliche. Being a Democrat, I realize that we must help the handicapped (ahem) and we must pity those who have no creativity (ahem), who are forced to copy the best lines of the worst people (ah-ahem) and who have such limited cranial activity that Silverman actually entertains their few neural synaptic impulses (ah-ah-ahem).

Sorry about that. It is dry out here.

Perhaps modern medical science can help, but in your particular case, I would strongly argue against self-medication.

102. Because she is an attractive woman....
the great Phyllis Diller said over 40 years ago that much of an audience would be hostile to a pretty female comic. There is resistance to both physical beauty and wit being present in a woman.
Sarah Siverman is the BEST stand up working today. And her detractors? They are just Jew-hating sexists.

79. Lots. Sarah is brilliant.
She's one of those rare breeds of people who come along every now and again and work in a particular field, but work in that field as a theorist as well as a practitioner.

She is to comedy what Robert Fripp is to guitar playing, or Meredith Monk is to singing.

She's maybe not laugh-out-loud funny (though sometimes she is), and hers is not straight-up easily digestible comedy like Bob Hope or Lewis Black or Paula Poundstone.

As I understand her, I think she's working on a higher, more theoretical level, exploring the possibilities of humor and social commentary.

And like most theoreticians, not everything she produces is "good", and she'll have more misses than a normal performer.

89. heh. The makers of the Pet Rock
were geniuses. They took an idea, added social commentary, and made out like bandits selling a joke on the nation. Silverman has none of those qualities, IMHO.

96. Her character is pitiful just like the
characters in Seinfeld. She just ratchets it up a few notches, and takes more risks. Sometimes it is very painful to watch, but so was Seinfeld.

101. I think she's gross
"exploring the possibilities of humor"

I will give her that! I rented a video of her not having a clue who she was (TV-free me!) and ended up watching the whole thing just thinking, I don't know why I'm watching this, but I just gotta see what she says NEXT!

I found her funny for a moment or two, but I think shock-value from saying gross stuff is where she gets her mileage, and it's just not the same as humor.

The songs on "Lil' Bush" take the cake for funny, though. "Hot dogs are so much fun, I'd torture a grown man to get me one..."

92. I like her, but I can understand her detractors.
And I don't think people who dislike that type of humor are "oversensitive" at all. It's a simple matter of taste.

For the record, I enjoy Lampanelli as well, especially her appearances on the Comedy Central roasts.

I'm glad there are some sensible SS fans. Her fanbase are almost as bad as the Claybots, at least on DU. Just because someone doesn't like a particular comic doesn't mean their entire taste in comedy runs to the opposite, bland extreme. I get so tired of hearing that her detractors are humorless and thin skinned. It's ridiculous. I'm glad you get it.
