8. It was for an evening event with an open bar, but
as stated in the OP - why pay to hang out with people I would never associate with outside of this environment?

10. My wife's costs $29/person. Though she does work for the school
system. I don't know if I would want my tax dollars going to a dinner party?

11. i have no problem with public employees having work parties
school teachers/gov't employees should be able to have holiday parties, i don't mind

i have a big problem with employers charging employees to endure forced socialization with people they don't really like all that much.

i occasionally go to lunch with people at work that i like. i don't want to go to lunch with anyone that i don't know/don't like. call me crazy.

9. It's stuff like this that slows my career growth.
My attitude is the same as yours. I don't chip in for that shit, nor do I chip in when someone loses a second cousin or stuff like that. My attitude is clear to all: "I come to this office to earn money from you, not to give it back."

I also refuse to join the office bowling team, which irks the crap out of my boss since I carry an average in the low 190s.

13. Ah, the joys of being hit up at work.
People who have cool co-workers don't know how lucky they are. My last job had great co-workers, but most of my jobs have had people I would cross the street to avoid. Cherish your cool ones, they don't come around too often. Spending eight hours a day, five days week with people you can't stand, to pay the bills, has got to be depicted in a Hieronymus Bosch painting somewhere.

14. I was asked (told) to chip in $30 for my boss for her gift
This, mind you, is a woman who owns the company and takes trips around the world regularly. We're putting up $30 each so we can buy her a limo ride around NYC and a dinner at a nice resturant.

I'll probably pony up the dough. I really have no choice.

15. that is exactly how I feel about that kind of thing
once I worked at a place where they expected everyone to chip in at birthdays, on all holidays (well, the women would cook and clean up after and the men didn't contribute hardly anything), and then if someone had a freaking tonsillectomy or whatever they passed the hat for that too. It puts you in an awkward position, but I got out of it as much as I could. I never went to those company Christmas parties either...I really don't 'get' the concept of all that (unless you are climbing the corporate ladder and invested in the schmoozing aspect).

18. We always paid for our work party
But I worked for the government.

And as far as paying to eat with fellow employees, if it wasn't for work, I wouldn't have had any holiday party to attend.

I always envied people who were over-burdened with invitations every December.

23. Who's the assistant to the head honcho there?
That's where the power lies.

We didn't get raises this year, but I have no influence with that. I do, however, keep our director informed that it's in her best interest to pay for a staff luncheon off site for the holiday.

This year's menu (in case somebody in your office needs help...)

Classic Caesar Salad with Croutons
Soup of the Day
Stuffed Breast of Chicken with Boursin Cheese and Fresh Spinach in a Sun Dried Tomato Cream Sauce
Penne Pasta Rustico with Tomato Fillets, Fresh Basil, Roasted Garlic and Grilled Vegetables
Sliced Sirloin Tri Tips with Crimini Mushrooms and Pearl Onions
Roasted Garlic Mashed Potatoes
Roasted Winter Vegetable Medley
Chef’s Selection of Holiday Desserts
