Ireland to protect red squirrels from grey peril
http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20071118/sc_afp/irelandnirelandnaturesquirrelconservation_071118201015
DUBLIN (AFP) - Ireland's red squirrels, which are threat from their more aggressive grey British cousins, are to be thrown a lifeline under a plan published Sunday by the environment ministry.

The red squirrel is one of the most threatened mammals in Ireland but the collaborative rescue plan involving the authorities in both the Republic and British-ruled Northern Ireland is an effort to reverse the decline.
<snip>
Finally I get to use this wolf tones clip as a reference to something do with the Brits vs Irish ever since the peace agreement and de-nouncing of violence by the IRA.

1. The grey ones don't come from Britain
I mean, the ones invading Ireland may be coming from Britain, but they're not native here either. Our own native squirrels are also red, and they too are being displaced by the grey ones.

14. They were introduced in the late 19th century.
I read that somewhere. I don't know where they came from. North America, maybe, because we have gray squirrels but I don't know if they are the same species. Introduction of exotics works both ways I guess. We got house sparrows (which have devastated eastern bluebird populations) and pigs (from more than one source- British and Spanish conquistadors both brought them- they turned feral and are just about everywhere now).

Exotic, non-native species are a problem worldwide.

2. I only learned just last year that the two types of squirrels can't live together.
I never knew that before...

Carry on, old chap!

12. I will drive the grey squirrel from Ireland!
Give me a net, some live traps and a boat- Sainthood can come later!- Full Irish breakfast, tea at 10, a bowl of lamb stew at lunch and 6 pints of Guinness per day that is all it will take.
