Kanye West overwhelmed with emotion while performing a song dedicated to his late mother
Kanye West broke into tears last night when attempting to perform the song "Hey Mama" at a concert in Paris.

Members of the audience told PEOPLE that Kanye had dedicated the song to his mother and began to start performing -- when he suddenly became overwhelmed with emotion. One audience member told the mag, "A back-up singer, the DJ and a guitar player came over to console him. It looked like he might collapse. He just couldn't continue. He just stood there in a spotlight, crying while the band continued playing."

West left the stage, but eventually returned to perform the song "Stronger" with the audience yelling out their support. He is expected to return to the U.S. for his mother's Tuesday funeral in Oklahoma City.

1. So sad...
It's probably just too soon for him to face his loss while performing. What a terrible and sudden thing... poor guy :(

2. Yes...whatever people think of Kanye, he's really hurting right now.
I know people who love him and his music, and others who see him as an egomaniac. One thing that most people will agree on, I believe, is that he loved his mom, and that she was a source of inspiration and encouragement to him. I lost my mom 5 years ago. I can't relate to every aspect of Kanye's life, but I can certainly relate to that one.

3. Sorry to hear about your loss too

I don't know much about Kanye personally. I like some of his music though. I've seen him perform on TV once or twice and his mom was with him -- the bond they had was very obvious. I hope he has lots of other family around to help him through this tough time.

4. I think Kanye is a bit of a loudmouth - but I really dig his message
He had the balls to say what everyone else in the world was thinking after Katrina hit - that George Bush didn't give a fuck about all those people, predominantly African-American, were going to lose everything including their lives

5. Absolutely.
I look at other aspects of his journey...such as the Rolling Stone "crown of thorns" cover photo...and think "what a pantsload," but in this one situation, I've been there, seen that done that...in my own personal way, of course...and I understand to the best of my ability that this man is hurting.

10. I though he was an egomaniac
until I saw him spoof himself on SNL. He was f***ing hilarious and anyone who can make fun of themselves like that ain't all bad.

6. Aw, the poor guy.
Yeah, he can be a blowhard, but it really humanizes him to see him suffering so much over something universal, doesn't it? The Great Equalizer.

I'm not surprised he couldn't get through that song. I admire him for trying, though.

9. That's sad.
I wish him well. But on the positive side, I bet he makes some really good emotional music in the years to come.

13. I absolutely love this guy! And, I applaud him for performing
so close to his mother's death.

I am a 50ish white, housewife and I listen to his music in the car with my kids.

I have to say that the words from Stronger..."Gospel homey take 6, take this...HATERS..." made me a fan.

His mom sounded like a really great lady, and I hope that he will survive this and go forward. Blessings to you Kanye
