...I think. The internets seem to think it was WC Fields or maybe Fibber McGee.

Anyway, "lick" is used in the fighting sense. As in "He seems strong, but I think I can lick him." I don't think anyone uses the word in that sense anymore--too many embarassing double entrendres.
