The Age of Federalism by Stanley Elkins.

Page count is over 1200, with fine print and even finer-print end notes you can spend years with. Its about the Washington and Adams adminstration. It's basically my Bible.

one book that has haunted me since I read it is "Isaac's Storm" the story about the Galveston hurricane at the turn of the century.

Very interesting, don't really know if it is my favorite.
