1. everything will just be
and one day you will die.

learn to cope.

you have no control over anything except the contents of your head.

4. Yep.
A wise, wise friend of mine once told me, "The only thing you can ever hope to control is your own reaction."

In the throes of despair, that might seem like bad news, but in the 20 years since he first said that, I've discovered that my friend was exactly right.

9. I can't speak for datasuspect, but I don't think he was being intentionally mean to you, Writer.
datasuspect seems to save that up for the bullies (who deserve it). I've never seen you bully anyone. Keep on keepin' on, Writer. That's all any of us can do.

12. I'm not so naive a person that I must be told that life is "hard."
Believe me, I know that life can be rather difficult at times. However, a little humanity in the form of a hug and a pat on the back can do wonders for one's soul, and that is all I ask for here.

Thank you for yours.

14. i wasn't being mean
i sympathize.

sometimes though, it's easier to just get to the heart of the matter.

and sometimes things will just be the way they are. for good, for bad, for the indifferent.

15. Well I'm sorry that I erected my boundaries so quickly.
I do understand what you're saying and that you intend to point out reality. And it's that reality that we all must contend with that requires the periodic warm-and-fuzzy.

18. I know.
That's my approach, too, and especially when I'm the one having difficulty. I try, though, not to apply that mindset to others because it can feel harsh when one's nerves are raw and consequences are immediate, much as it did for me when my friend told me straight up that my reaction to circumstances was my greatest obstacle. It was a hardhardhard thing to hear, but it helped me tremendously that one of my friends had the courage to say what had to be said, instead of what I thought I needed to hear. (This isn't at all about Writer. It's about me at a particular time in my life.)

I have a hug for you, too, datasuspect.

25. Heidi, advice like that needs to be appropriately vetted before given.
I understand that great epiphany that occurs when one figures out that it's never good to face life as a victim, but instead channel that energy into taking steps forward. And it isn't an epiphany that many people reach in life. I myself have provided, as I have seen others provide in this forum, that type of advice to others; but sometimes one must weigh each situation separately, or else one risks sounding condescending and hurtful. Our own personal experiences color how we address others, but as you said above, a person has to be careful about when and where to apply the standards they acquired to others.

39. the other side of that coin is circumspection and discretion
when you lay your soul bare on a public forum, you can't be surprised at whatever reactions you might get.

but mostly, it is a matter of perspective.

46. like i said, perspective is about 95% of everything
in this example, i know of you through postings on an internet forum.

you or i could be anybody. i don't know you, you don't know me.

i could posture and play along, but i'd rather be honest. whatever "support" i could give you in this venue is ultimately meaningless.

words are feeble, anybody can say anything.

doesn't necessarily mean much.

i honestly hope you never suffer needlessly or go without though.

5. Come here, you!

It'll be fine...after it's shitty. But then, fine. Really. That's how life works...shitty...fine....shitty...fine. See? You have to get through the shitty times for the fine times to come. Honest.

So, if it's shitty now, it'll be fine soon. And the good news is that, in my experience, the fine times last longer than the shitty times. On average.

So, hold on.

Edited on Fri Nov-16-07 01:20 PM by caty
when I just don't think I can take anymore of the bullsh*t that has been dumped on us this last seven years. But, you know, I've always heard that some things run in seven year cycles. Maybe the next seven will be better somehow. In the meantime, I have put myself on a news blackout for a little while to let my mind and emotions rest. Oh, I'll still watch Olberman, Stewart, and Maher for a little info and a few light moments. Anyway....here's a friendly hug for you.....

Andrew Bird - Tables & Chairs

if we can call them friends then we can call them on their telephones
and they won't pretend that they're too busy or that they're not alone
and if we can call them friends then we can call
holler at them down these hallowed halls
just don't let the human factor fail to be a factor
at all

don't, don't you worry, about the atmosphere
or any sudden pressure change
cause i know
that it's starting to get warm in here
and things are starting to get strange

and did you, did you see how all of our friends were there
and they're drinking roses from the can?
and how, how i wish i, i had talked to them,
and i wish they fit into the plan

and we were tired of being mild
we were so tired of being mild
and we were tired...

i know we're going to meet some day
in the crumbled financial institutions of this land
there will be tables and chairs
there'll be pony rides and dancing bears
there'll even be a band
cause listen, after the fall there will be no more countries
no currencies at all, we're gonna live on our wits
we're gonna throw away survival kits,
trade butterfly-knives for adderal
and that's not all
ooh-ooh, there will be snacks there will
there will be snacks, there will be snacks.

and we were tired of being mild,
we were so tired of being mild,
and we were (we were so) tired...

so don't you,
don't you worry
about the atmosphere.
