A piece from the Associated Press this morning on recent deaths in the literary world posits that while Norman Mailer might be viewed as the best writer of his generation, Kurt Vonnegut was probably the most beloved.
http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5hxq_UiFItZRlEvL2lDpItkMutxUQD8SUD4581All well and good, except for this quote:
" "Vonnegut was the American Mark Twain. He even looked liked him. Everybody loved Vonnegut, whereas Norman was a much more controversial figure," says J. Michael Lennon, the literary executor for Mailer, who died Nov. 10 at age 84."
This guy is the literary executor for Norman Mailer, and he's that stupid? MARK TWAIN WAS AN AMERICAN, MORON! Mark Twain was the American Mark Twain. One of his claims to fame was writing in the American, Midwest vernacular of the region where he grew up. Where does he think Mark Twain was from, Istanbul?
A good arguement could be made for Vonnegut being the 20th century heir to Mark Twain. But this is idiotic.
Thanks for letting me vent.
