Marvin Gaye Appreciation - Check In
He said it all, "War is not the answer, all in love can conquer hate."

Any DUers fortunate enough to have caught him live? I was too young, but the man's music is so transcendent, inspiring, beautiful, moving. Who carries on his tradition today?

Please share stores, pictures, and your favorite Marvin tunes. A modern musical saint.

"I remember Marvin Gaye used to sing to me, had me feelin' like black was the thing to be." --Tupac

1. I love Marvin
he was a beautiful and sensitive human being. A strong and gentle man. Because of the nature of his work, he was surrounded by craziness, he was an island of calm among it all. His shows were just so cool during the the "What's Going On " period. More often than not, outdoors. At that time, his band would just play straight through, no stops between songs. If you listen to the album you get a sense of that. I saw him more times than I could count. I was fortunate enough to live near him, and then I lived in his place after his death (we bought it from the estate)

2. god i'm so jealous
yes, during that period his live shows (i've seen videos) were just one continuous jam with him floating in to sing hooks and hits, but it was like a SYMPHONY. What I would give to have been able to see him live.

was it just the most passionate show ever or what? that's what it seems like from the video footage i've seen.

i miss marivn :-(

3. There was passion
that's a good word for it. It was a magical time, and we all grooved as one entity.

4. well good on ya for having the foresight to catch him live
i wish there was something like him around these days. an unabashed pacifist and a musical genius who wasn't afraid to boldly affix his heart to his sleeve. one in a mill.

god bless Marvin, I miss him in these times. no doubt, he'd be appalled at "What's Going On" nowadays.

8. "Inner City Blues"

What's Going On was nothing like his previous work, being brilliant in a whole new way that had nothing to do with his trademark beggin'-pleadin' love songs.

Every Great Motown Hit has never left my car's six-disc changer since I loaded it nearly three years ago.

9. Sexual Healing, and Let's Get It On!
the opening to Let's Get It On! is one of the greatest ever.

I like the early stuff, too, like Can I Get A Witness, and Ain't No Mountain High Enough.
