Have you ever gotten your senses mixed up?
Example: I pulled into the garage yesterday, turned off the engine, shut the garage door, and heard something running in the basement. I couldn't quite make out if it was the furnace or the washing machine, so I opened the car door -- still couldn't make it out.

So I took off my sunglasses and put on my regular glasses expecting to be able to hear better and distinguish which sound I was hearing.

Anything like this ever happen to you?

(No, I couldn't divine that it was the washer, not the furnace, until I opened the basement door.)

1. Nope.
I'm pretty sure that's just happened only to you.

2. Lots of times
I guess the discomfort of having some kind of malfunction in one of your senses (like having sunglasses on inside) distracts you from concentrating.

3. What's that called? Synesthesia?
I think?

Where sometimes colors can be interpreted as sound by the brain.

8. Yep
I have a lucky friend who sees notes as a color and has perfect pitch. I, on the other hand, cant tell when a piano is out of tune.
Have you ever said ouch when you drop your pencil? I do that more than I would care to admit.

5. No, I'm pretty sure it's both a phenomenon, and a disorder, as well

6. It's made me think of the work of Dr. Oliver Sacks
This incident reminded me of his book The Man Who Mistook His Wife for A Hat. Anyone else ever read it?

(The film "Awakenings" was based on Dr. Sacks's work)

I have to get it out of the library again. Maybe I should call Dr. Sacks. Hmm...

11. Yep.
And, as someone mentioned upthread, I've said "ouch" when I dropped something.... I hope I remember to pay attention to this in the next few days. It's fascinating. I wonder how many more I'll come up with.

And... when I bend down to tie my shoes, I ask myself, "is there anything else I can do while I'm down here?" I wonder if that's part of the phenomenon.
