This is NOT a pretty PHOTO! Look at this -- those of us who still love the ocean, and live near it.

3. there was a strong surge that day
....but not as bad as expected. They were predicting a lot of deaths from flooding and wave action. Some towns were evacuated on the eastern shore of England.

4. So it's storm activity, then? Wow.
Weird that it's on the east coast; aren't the prevailing winds from the west?

5. I'm not sure about the dynamics of the storm
England spared serious flooding
By Fiona Harvey, Environment Correspondent

Parts of the UK on Friday narrowly avoided catastrophic flooding after the East Anglian coast had the biggest tidal surge for 50 years.

Great Yarmouth bore the brunt of the damage, caused by swells from the North Sea. Sea walls were breached in several places and thousands of people evacuated their homes but many were returning on Friday night. However, while the danger had past for most areas by midday on Friday, people in areas around the Norfolk Broads were warned that flooding might occur over the weekend.

Mr Benn said on Friday it had been “a close run thing” as waters were only about 20cm lower than feared in some areas. He added the government was looking closely at flood defences for the future, and cited the increase in flood spending from £600m to £800m a year promised in the pre-Budget report.

6. Bennyboy, I should have posted a link to this news. The storm was not as bad as predicted.

But bad enough for those who had these homes and others. This is the original post, and I apologize. I am no authority on the subject of wind direction in the UK, but others on this thread discuss it and have posted other links.

I did see some coverage on the weather channel's international news about this event. That's about it.

8. Thanks I saved that thread from yesterday and posted it
on a couple of other sites. Of course everyone spent the entire day calling me an alarmist and thanks to you, I gave them something to show them that might not be the case.

It's pretty horrific when you think of island nations like the U.K.; and even more terrifying when you consider all the large and small cities with so many people on the coasts of the United States.

13. Click on the link in the first post, and you will see their fate.
They were not houses...more like plywood shacks/storage. They ended up all broken apart, jumbled about.

Still it make you wonder about people who build homes inches from the shore...Always thought that was foolish.
