Dixie or Yankee? Quiz
Edited on Mon Feb-02-04 11:11 AM by lovedems
Dixie or Yankee?

Just a fun little quiz to see where you rank.

I had a 40% which means a good Yankee score. I guess that would be typical living in the Midwest.

Edit: It isn't really a poll, it is more like a quiz.

97. Also from Delaware
scored a 36% Yankee. I remember going up to Pennsylvania and being called a "rebel" and going down to Maryland and being called a "Yankee. The Mason/Dixon line went through the back yard and people still took it seriously in the 50's.

31. I have a beef
There were some choices I made that the quizz classified as "yankee" - esp Michigan (?!) and Penn/Ohio area. PA and Ohio make sense b/c my mother was from western PA.

There were some choices I made that are clearly southern, such as "y'all, and "coke" for that fizzy drink.

However, many more of my responses fell into the "prevelant all over the country" category. Wouldn't it make sense to say I had no greater degree of yanker or southerner?

15. I got 56%...
I guess that's because I spent a lot of my "growing-up" years in larger towns with transplanted Yankees moving in; a lot of those true "Deep-Dixie" phrases I mainly heard out of my Grandmother in Alabama! :eyes:

I still can't get over the way you can tell whether you're talking to a Yankee or a Midwesterner (we DO make the distinction, btw) by whether you hear them say "soda" (Northeast) or "pop" (Midwest). We just say "Coke", "Pepsi", or "drink"--the latter of which confuses the heck out of Yankees, who think we're lushes when we say that one so often! :eyes:

They left another one out--in an elevator, you don't "push" the button; you "mash" the button! :D

B-)

Maybe not so surprised.

My dad's from Indiana and says crik for creek, though I do mock him for it, apparently I've got more Dixie than I thought.

Not a surprise since I was born there, and one branch of the family tree has been rooted there for a long time. I guess the Yankee influence came from my mom's branch.

70. 52% (Dixie). You are barely into the Dixie category!
I think it was the roly poly that tipped it.

Qualifications:

When I lived in New York I would have called the road parallel to the highway an "access road", but now that I've been in Minnesota for 15 years I call it a "frontage road".

I pronounce "route" both ways. "Route" as a verb I pronounce like "ow". I got this from the pizza delivery business where it is a technical term for assigning deliveries to drivers based on location.
