I'm going to a Diwali party tonight!
Yesterday my oldest daughter decided we had to put a bit of a Diwali display up, next to our Thanksgiving decorations, so we found a few candles and some statures my youngest daughter got when we visited a Hindu Temple last year.

We live in such a multi-cultural place, we end up celebrating Eid with the Muslims and Diwali with the Hindus, while also celebrating the Christian and American holidays, also. We are Unitarians, so it's all ok, anyway!

1. so, is it not o.k. if you're not a Unitarian?
Just asking.

2. Of course not...

there will be Muslims and Christians at the party, too, it's just a little more understandable for a Unitarian family to have a Diwali display, than for, say, a Christian family. The family hosting the party is obviously Hindu, but they have both a ceramic mosque and (I swear this is true) a ceramic representation of the Last Supper in their living room. Apparently the lady in the family went to a convent school in India.....

3. I think a lot more people are religiously eclectic that you might realize
This woman seems to be an example of that. I know that Unitarians pride themselves on this, (as a former Unitarian myself), but it really happens lots of places.

5. Did you ever see the Diwali Party episode of "The Office"?

The Indian actress on the show (Mindy, who is also one of the writers) wrote it, and it's hysterical.

8. The party was great, although
there's nothing like a roomful of academics to make a SAHM feel intellectually inadequate. Still, the samosas and Diwali sweets were lovely, and that's abig consolation.

9. I have several Ganesha murtis in my home.
Including two very large ones. I'm going to at least light a few candles tonight.

Happy Diwali! :)
