Was anyone else disgusted by the Columbia tribute?
I think it was a nice idea to honor those astronauts before the national anthem, but I really thought it went over the top. I'm thinking in particular about the person in the spacesuit, planting the flag on the fake moon thingy that they had in the center of the field. Maybe I'm just being cynical, but I thought the display was excessive.

1. It was overly dramatic
The song would have been sufficient.

2. They probably meant well
There just aren't many live show things in a stadium that don't come off hokey.

Remember the gawd awful Opening Ceremonies at Atlanta and Salt Lake City?

I guess I'm not arguing the intention
but rather the execution. And you're right, it's definitely not the first time that something like that has been over-dramatized.

16. It wasn't all awful
>Remember the gawd awful Opening Ceremonies at Atlanta and Salt Lake City?<

There was one segment of the opening ceremonies in SLC that was touching. It was Sting performing "Fragile" with Yo Yo Ma's accompaniment. We were disgusted at the marketing of Bunnypants.

If the NFL and CBS (and the producers,) would have planned a simple and quiet tribute to the astronauts before the festivities started, it would have been much better. (Maybe Josh Groban could have sung without the adoring-chick backdrop.)

I thought the "space theme" was cheap and exploitative.

6. I'm just happy that MTV won't be back.

I was not impressed at all with the entertainment before the game and at halftime. Where's the fun if the entire halftime show entertainers are going to lip-synch? Sting and Gewn Stefani didn't last year...

7. 99.999 % could not have cared LESS.. They just wanted to
watch football, get drunk, eat a bunch of junk, and then crash for a while....

These over-the-top "rembrance ceremonies" are ridiculous.. Instead of being a dignified and meaningful, they just end up being cheesy and crass..

America has become a caricature of itself.. Thanks, marketers :(

8. I always thought the dancing tortilla chips at Fiesta Bowl best
If you're gonna have a tribute at a football game, make it something football fans relate to. In this case it was "A Tribute to Nachos", I believe.

12. Sorry, I wasn't on last night.
"How effective would it have been to run the names of all of the soldiers killed since March 19,03?"

I agree that type of tribute (done tastefully) would have been more appropriate.

I didn't mean to imply that you were. I'm glad to see that someone else thought it was so egregious that they addressed it as well. :)

10. Totally Agree
The spacesuit was sooo ridiculous; I almost couldn't believe my eyes. Then I remembered MTV and that they were in Houston, we have a problem.

and, to promote his Mission to Moon and Mars ... since the media/PR has has gone so over the X-treme top ... hardly anything is done with quiet dignity and grace ... why not go full-whack???

I think next year's Super Bowl is in Jacksonville (from one Bush state to another) ... how will they top this year's? I'm hedging on the finale scene of 'The Full Monty' or a 70s retro-theme featuring a musical number from "Let My People Come" ...

sensationalism is our Media's creed

How about those Pats?
