Even more offensive than Janet's breast (long and RANTY)
We watched the Super Bowl.

To be completely honest, I am so underwhelmed by the talent (?) of one Justin Timberlake that we weren't even watching the "Janet Jackson's Pasties Halftime Show". (I was actually hoping that Miss Jackson would perhaps sing another one of her hits, but hell, isn't halftime at the Super Bowl mostly prancing around and making an ass out of oneself instead? Yes, P. Diddy, or whatever the hell it is you call yourself, I'm talking to you...)

Both DH and I were absolutely infuriated by the cavalier and disrespectful "salutes" to the astronauts who died one year ago today. I realize that the Super Bowl is "entertainment". After all, why bring everyone down by, gosh, staging a tasteful and appropriate tribute instead of the piece of crap that passed as "recognition"?

I can't even believe that CBS thought it was cute to show the film clip of Aerosmith in astronaut's clothing. I'm sure that they thought they were bringing back memories of the cinematic masterpiece (yeah, right,) "Armageddon". I thought my lunch would come back up instead. No, Steven Tyler, wearing an astronaut pin and leering from behind the space suit helmet does not make you an astronaut.

Josh Groban's song would have been much nicer if he did not have the gaggle of adoring females behind him, let alone the waving pompons. Ewwww. I must be getting too old for this s*it.

One of the nicer "tribute" type things we've ever seen was at the Salt Lake City Olympics opening ceremony; Sting sang his hit "Fragile," while Yo Yo Ma accompanied him on the cello. Is something like the above too much to ask of the Super Bowl organizers and CBS? We've also seen tributes at other sporting events that were quiet, appropriate, and hopefully, meaningful to bereaved family members that might be watching.

The straw that broke the camel's back for both of us, though, was Kid Rock's defacement of the flag as a fashion statement. I understand that Bono also had a flag lining in a coat that he wore at the Super Bowl a couple of years back. I wasn't upset by this. Maybe I'm biased because I like Bono, but I believe that his treatment of our flag wasn't disrespectful. I thought that he wanted to show his solidarity with us while we were all still grieving over September 11th. (I'm sure he could have achieved this with a flag pin, but maybe he didn't want to copy Bunnypants.)

I realize I have ranted, and ranted, and RANTED. What did you all think? If this is the "new" Super Bowl, maybe it's better if I don't watch next year.

Favorite commercial: The NFL Channel's commercial with various members of the Dallas Cowboys singing "Tomorrow".

Hope CBS lost lots of revenue during the 10 minutes we (and most likely hundreds of thousands of others,) were tuned to CNN to see "Child's Pay".

Our guest hadn't seen it previously and didn't know about "Bush in 30 Seconds." She was very impressed by the commercial and quickly commented that she couldn't understand why CBS would not show it.

4. I hear ya!
As a Patriot fan, gotta say I loved the game :-) , but I could do without all the hyped up BS that goes along with it. The NFL, in their attempts to squeeze every last nickel of profit out of this game, are starting to lose sight of the game's purpose.

I mean Astronauts, paraglidings, MTV spectacular,Justin and, ah, Janet. Way too much. Aerosmith (I remember catching their act at Sir Morgan's Cove in Worcester, MA in the early 70's....I wasn't impressed then, not impressed now)->are they the official band of the NFL?

I know the primary purpose today is to sell beer and sex, but it's kind of too bad.

I can only wonder what this game will look like in 20 years.....

5. Carolina players already drinking heavily
Bring back Bud Bowl! You can't top that with farting horses or natural male enhancement products. Lame, lame commercials.

GO PANTHERS next year god dammit

I wonder if they'll even bother staging the game in 20 years. I'm also wondering what they'll be doing next year at halftime to top BoobGate.

7. It was disgusting. Vegas cheeseball bombastic confetti orgasm
Yet another time when you can feel embarrassed to be an American is watching anything involving the Superbowl that isn't the game itself.

Maybe it speaks volumes about this country. Maybe I should just leave.

8. You could do what I do ...
1. Watch the football game.
2. Don't watch the other crap.
I find the Superbowl to be very enjoyable to watch that way.

21. I agree, I skipped the pre-game, the pre-pre-game.......
the pre-pre-pre-game, the opening ceremony, halftime and most everything else that wasn't part of the game itself. If you can manage that you'll find that there is an actual football game going on....and yesterday's game was pretty good as far as Superbowl games go I thought.

9. My wife and I were pissed over the disrespect for the flag too!
The air was so full of toxic smoke after halftime, that the players will probably have shortened life spans from the lung damage! The football game was pretty good though! Too bad it was in Texas!

10. I vented my feelings about "Kid Rock" in a previous post...
but I found his tattered flag 'poncho' utterly repulsive.

To make it short: I would have preferred to pull that flag off of him, then pass some of the Budweiser onto his no talent personage.

...I called people in from outside to watch Kid Rock desecrate the flag. Hey dipshit, the flag is not to be worn as clothing! :grr:

The whole time, I was thinking, "The NFL? The space program?" I though it was very odd. And the end of it, with the spaceman? :wtf:

I'm sure that they thought it was a "touching" moment in honor of the space program and those that died in the space shuttle. Instead, it looked like a very expensive blunder.

Hey, NFL, your coverage laid an egg.

15. A question perhaps even more in need of answering is:
How can 150 million people voluntarily sit through X mind-numbing hours of watching pansies on steroids behind one foot of protection throw a ball about for three seconds, only to have play stopped for four minutes...every time.

I will never understand some aspects of American culture but hey, we have cricket...

17. Who was the rapper who kept grabbing his crotch?
He was on before Kid Rock and his no-talent screeching song about himself --- "Kid Rock at the Super Bowl !" yeah, right. At any rate, one of the rappers before himn kept putting his hand to his crotch while he was dancing. Low-life. Totally low-life

Who does he think he is, George's brother Marvelous Marvin Bush gearing up for a romp with an underage Thai prostitute?

I mean, give me a break.

19. That was Nelly
>Who does he think he is, George's brother Marvelous Marvin Bush gearing up for a romp with an underage Thai prostitute?<

Crotch grabbing while performing was edgy while Michael Jackson was singing "Billie Jean" in the 80's. Now it's just pathetic and desperate, similar to allowing someone else to rip one's top while performing and claiming that it "wasn't planned" and it was a "costume malfunction".

Gosh, that Marvin (or was it Neil?) is a lucky guy, isn't he? The only other person that probably finds women at his hotel room door, begging to have sex with him, is Brad Pitt. Neil/Marvin must be a reallllll hottie, hm?

Yeah, right :eyes:

18. Never watch the half-time show, it's guaranteed to suck
Do something different, call a friend, say hello :7

Btw, I still mourn the loss of the "Butt-bowl" episodes of Beavis and Butthead that MTV would do during half-time.

20. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
I was so disgusted with this but on other threads in DU I was accused of being "puritanical" because I didn't want the small kids attending the Super Bowl party exposed to Janet's bare breast.

It's one thing to be liberal, it's another thing to not have a clue about what is appropriate on what is supposed to be a prime time family event. Crotch grabbing, flag desecrating, ripping clothes off, what a horrible representation of what this country is about to the rest of the world.

Whew, I feel better now...
